Zimbabwe stole the show with impressive performance

After losing 5 matches including one-off Test, 3 ODIs and 1 T20I, the Zimbabwe Cricket Team produced an all-round effort to defeat Bangladesh in 2nd match played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on Friday.

Zimbabwe stand-in captain Sikander Raza won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as Marumani was dismissed cheaply by Mahedi Hasan. Wesley Madhevere and Regis Chakabva showed some intent against the Bangladeshi bowlers hitting them for boundaries. It was a bad choice of stroke as Chakabva tried to slog but provided a simple catch to Shoriful Islam. Zimbabwe ended the first six overs at 48 for 2.

After the field restrictions, Madhevere and Dion Mayers kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting boundaries. Madhevere starting aggressively slowed down but Mayers showed intent putting the Bangladeshi bowlers under pressure. The Bangladeshi fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped catches. A superb knock came to end as Mayers was caught by Mahedi Hasan at deep point. Mayers and Madhevere added 57 runs for the 3rd wicket. Madhevere reached his 3rd T20I fifty-off 45 balls. Sikander Raza was brilliantly run out by Soumya Sarkar at the non-striker end. Madhevere held his fort and was dismissed eventually for well-made 73. Ryan Burl proved his mettle by smacking 16 runs off Saifuddin in the 19th over. Burl remained not out on a quickfire 34 off 19 balls to help Zimbabwe post 166 for 6.

Chasing 167 runs to win, Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start as both openers Sarkar and Naim got out cheaply by Muzabrani. Naim chopped onto the stumps while Sarkar provided a simple catch to Raza. Shakib AL Hasan looked in decent touch while Hasan struggled with his timing. After initial good overs by Zimbabwe, Jongwe gave runs. Bangladesh ended the first six overs at 42 for 2.

Soon after the field restrictions, Wellington got two big wickets of Shakib AL Hasan and Mahmudullah cheaply to leave Bangladesh in trouble at 52 for 4. Zimbabwe bowlers kept on taking wickets at regular intervals not allowing visitors to score runs easily. The debutant Shamim Hossain showed lots of aggression keeping the hopes alive. Jongwe got the vital breakthrough dismissing Shamim. Shamim and Afif added 41 runs for the 7th wicket. Mohammad Saifuddin provided some resistance, but it was not enough as Zimbabwe bowled out Bangladesh for 143 in the 20th over.

Zimbabwe 166 for 6 in 20 overs (Wesley Madhevere 73, Burl 34*, Shoriful Islam 3/33) beat Bangladesh 143 in 19.5 overs (Shamim Hossain 29, Wellington Masakadza 3/20, Muzabrani 2/21) by 23 runs.

For his 73 off 54 balls, Wesley Madhevere was awarded the man of the match. With this win, Zimbabwe leveled the series at 1-1. The third and decider will be played on Sunday.
