CPL 2021: Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots register wins
It was an entertaining start of this year’s CPL season as Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots register wins played at Warner Park, St Kitts on Thursday.
Guyana Amazon Warriors stunned defending Champions Trinbago
Knight Riders easily in the opening encounter. TKR captain Kieron Pollard won
the toss and decided to field first. Chanderpaul Hemraj began off well for
Guyana Amazon by putting Ravi Rampaul for big shots while Brandon King
struggled to time the ball. Sunil Narine got the breakthrough dismissing Hemraj
not being able to keep the shot providing an easy catch to Hosein at short third man.
Odean Smith looked in great touch putting the TKR bowlers
under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, Guyana Amazon Warriors made
43 for 1. Soon, Narine dismissed dangerous Smith to put Guyana under pressure.
King struggle came to an end as he tried perished for a terrible 9 runs off 17
balls.
TKR bowlers kept the pressure on Shoaib Malik by bowling dot
balls while Shimron Hetymer kept rotating strike. Malik perished while trying
to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Seales. Playing his first CPL,
Mohammed Hafeez also could not rotate the strike and made life tough. Warriors
kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Hetymer was firm at one end. Hetymer
upped the ante and provided some late flurry reaching his fifty off 38 balls.
Romario Shephard also contributed decently scoring just 9 runs but added 38
runs for the 7th wicket. Guyana Amazon Warriors posted 142 for 7 in
20 overs.
Chasing 143 runs to win, Lendl Simmons started off brightly
before being dismissed by Shephard. Colin Munro and Sunil Narine put Guyana Amazon
Warriors bowlers under pressure with attacking strokes. Hafeez got the big
wicket of Colin Munro to dent the TKR chase. At the end of the first six overs, TKR
made 50 for 2.
Imran Tahir got the big wicket of Sunil Narine putting TKR
under pressure. Tahir was spot on with his line and lengths making life tough
for the opposition. Guyana Amazon Warriors did not allow TKR batsmen to score
runs easily and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Despite Naveen Ul
Haq struggling for rhythm in last over, Guyana Amazon Warriors held their
nerves to win the match by 9 runs.
Guyana Amazon Warriors 142 for 7 in 20 overs (Shimron Hetymer
54*, Sunil Narine 2/17, Akeal Hossain 2/17) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 133 for
9 in 20 overs ( Denesh Ramdin 28, Hossain 22*, Imran Tahir 2/12, Smith 2/10) by
9 runs.
For his all-around performance, Odean Smith was named the
man of the match award.
Under the new captain of Dwayne Bravo, St Kitts, and Nevis
Patriots started CPL 2021 with a comfortable win over Barbados Royals. Barbados
Royals captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to field first.
It was an ideal start for Royals as Oshane Thomas and
Mohammad Aamir broke the backbone of the Patriots batting lineup with wickets of
Lewis, Devon Thomas, Gayle, and Asif Ali. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots ended the first six overs in big trouble at 38 for 4.
Sherfane Rutherford and Dwayne Bravo steadied the ship putting
bowlers under pressure with attacking strokes. Both complimented each other
making sure they recover and keep the scoreboard ticking.
Barbados's Tridents fielding was brilliant Walsh Junior
produced some brilliant saves at the boundary. Rutherford completed his fifty
off 42 balls and was eventually dismissed by Jason Holder. Rutherford and Bravo
added 115 runs for the 4th wicket.
Fabien Allen and Bravo hit some quickfire runs in the death
overs to help St Kitts and Nevis Patriots post 175 for 5.
Chasing 176 runs to win, Royal’s innings never got going as
they lost 2 quick wickets of Charles and Phillips. Shai Hope looked in decent
touch putting Patriot’s bowlers under some pressure. At the end of the first
six overs, the Royals made 48 for 2.
Dominic Drakes bowled with great control and did not allow Royal’s
batsmen to score runs easily. Hope and Azam Khan put on 37 runs for the 5th
wicket but did not keep with the required run rate. Hayden Walsh Junior provided
some entertainment as St Kitts won the match easily by 21 runs.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 175 for 5 in 20 overs (
Rutherford 53, Bravo 47*, Oshane Thomas 3/22) beat Barbados Tridents 154 for 7
in 20 overs ( Hope 44, Azam Khan 28, Dominic Drakes 2/13) by 21 runs.
For his brilliant knock of 53, Rutherford was awarded the
man of the match.
