India versus England 3rd Test 2nd Day: Batsmen help England into dominating position
After the bowlers did a superb job, England batsmen kept the pressure on Indian bowlers to end the 2nd day of the 3rd Test match in a commanding position played at Headingly, Leeds on Thursday.
Starting on the overnight score of 120 for 0, Rory Burns and
Haseeb Hameed began off cautiously hitting bad balls off Ishant Sharma for
boundaries. Mohammed Shami bowled great lines and lengths not allowing the
England openers to score runs easily. Shami finally got the breakthrough
dismissing Rory Burns with a beauty ending 135 runs opening partnership.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled with great control making life tough
for Haseeb Hameed. Playing Test match after a gap of 3 years was gifted a loosener
by Mohammed Siraj. Ravindra Jadeja produced a peach to dismiss Hameed providing
some hope to the Indian team. Joe Root continued his sensational form with a flurry
of boundaries. Dawid Malan showed some class as the Indian bowlers did not have
any control over lines and lengths. England went into lunch break in a
commanding position at 182 for 2.
After the lunch break, Joe Root and Malan played with intent
putting Indian bowlers under immense pressure hitting boundaries at will.
Indian captain Kohli took the second new ball immediately, but Root and Malan had
other ideas. Root reached his fifty off 57 balls to keep the momentum going
while Malan also completed a half-century too off 99 balls. At the stroke of tea
break, Siraj dismissed Malan via review for being caught behind down the leg. The
umpire gave it not out and on review, it was overturned to out as there was an
edge. Malan and Root added 139 runs for the 3rd wicket. England went
into the tea break with scoreboard reading 298 for 3.
Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root started the third session
steadily keeping the scoreboard ticking. Bairstow smacked Ravindra Jadeja for
boundaries piling the misery on Indian bowlers. Mohammed Shami struck getting
rid of Bairstow as Kohli took a good low catch. Bairstow and Root added 52 runs
for the 4th wicket.
Ravindra Jadeja continued from one end as Root completed a century
off 124 balls. Soon after, Shami struck again to dismiss Jos Buttler providing an easy catch to Ishant Sharma. Jasprit Bumrah castled Joe Root stumps ending a
brilliant captain's knock. Moeen Ali could not clear the shot giving an easy catch
to substitute fielder Axar Patel at mid-on.
Jasprit Bumrah produced some great deliveries to Sam Curran
and got off King pair. Craig Overton and Sam Curran attacked the Indian bowlers
with boundaries. Siraj dismissed Sam Curran with a sharp bouncer as Mayank
Agarwal took a good catch. Curran and Overton added 35 runs for the 8th
wicket.
Ishant Sharma looked out of color bowling wayward
deliveries as Craig Overton took the advantage. The Indian captain Kohli took
the review of the last ball as Ollie Robinson was given not out and the decision was
retained as it hit inside edge. England ended the 2nd day in a
dominating position at 423 for 8.
England 423 for 8 in 129 overs ( Joe Root 121, Hameed 68,
Burns 61, Shami 3/87, Siraj 2/86) lead India 78 in 40.4 overs ( Rohit 19,
Rahane 18, Anderson 3/6, Overton 3/14) by 345 runs.
