CPL 2021 Finals: Dominic Drakes brilliance helps St Kitts and Nevis Patriots win a last ball thriller
Thanks to a great effort by Dominic Drakes, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defeated St Lucia Kings in a thrilling final of CPL 9 played at Warner Park, St Kitts on Wednesday.
St Lucia Kings captain Andre Fletcher won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was an aggressive start by Fletcher who smashed
Sheldon Cottrell for a six. With the scoreboard reading 11 runs off 5
deliveries, rain arrived, and stopped play.
After a short rain delay break, Fawad Ahmed struck as
Sheldon Cottrell took a brilliant catch running backward and fell right back on
his neck. Drakes got rid of Mark Deyal on his first ball of the spell putting
Kings under pressure. Evin Lewis injured his shoulder while fielding and was
taken by physio out of the field.
Rakheem Cornwall looked in superb touch putting the Patriot's
bowlers under serious pressure. At the end of the first six overs, St Lucia Kings
scored 46 for 2. Cornwall made use of his power while Roston Chase kept him
good company.
Soon after the drinks break, Fabien Allen struck to dismiss
the dangerous Cornwall. Cornwall and Chase added 44 runs for the 3rd
wicket. David Wiese was castled by Jaggesar with a slider to leave St Lucia Kings
in some trouble at 81 for 4.

stumps. Keemo Paul provided some late impetus with 3 sixes off Drakes in 19th
over. Naseem Shah got rid of Chase with a pacy delivery hitting the timber.

Lucia Kings posted 159 for 7 in 20 overs.

for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. St Lucia Kings got off to a perfect start as
Chase got rid of explosive Chris Gayle in the first over itself. Joshua Da
Silva was promoted at number 3 and looked in decent touch right from word go
hitting boundaries off Roston Chase.
A sensational piece of catching by Roston Chase at deep midwicket
resulted in the wicket of inform Evin Lewis. Alazzari Joseph missed a golden
chance to run out Sherfane Rutherford. At the end of the first six overs, the
hosts scored 40 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Rutherford and Da Silva kept
the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting boundaries off bad deliveries.
Right before drinks break, Kesrick Williams had enough pressure on Joshua Da
Silva before Wiese took a good catch at backward point to end the dangerous
partnership. Da Silva and Rutherford added 45 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Dominic Drakes was given a chance at number 5 and made his
intentions clear from ball 1. St Lucia Kings made a comeback into the match as
Joseph grabbed Rutherford’s wicket with a simple return catch to leave Patriots
in some trouble.
Kings bowlers kept the pressure on Patriots batsmen with dot
deliveries. Wiese dismissed Patriots captain Dwayne Bravo as Keemo Paul took an
easy catch at the boundary to leave the hosts in more trouble.
Dominic Drakes and Fabien Allen steadied the ship for
Patriots keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries. The match ebbed and
flow from one side to another. Wahab Riaz grabbed the important wicket of
Fabien Allen with a simple catch at the boundary by Keemo Paul. Drakes and
Allen added 44 runs for the 6th wicket.
Dominic Drakes changed the fortunes of the game again with a
massive six from Riaz bowling. Sheldon Cottrell joined the party by cracking a boundary. He was then dismissed as Chase produced a bullet throw as there was
clash between Riaz and Cottrell resulting in running out of Cottrell.
The match went down to the last over with 9 runs required.
Kesrick Williams produced 3 brilliant deliveries before Dominic Drakes took the
responsibility and helped the hosts win the match on the last ball.
After a disappointing wooden spoon last year, it was
remarkable performance by St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to lift their maiden CPL
title after 9 years.

Drakes 48*, Joshua Da Silva 37, Wahab Riaz 2/36, Joseph 1/22) beat St Lucia
