Indian women versus Australian women 1st ODI: Australian women continue their winning streak
The Australian women’s team continued their winning streak in
ODIs as they defeated the Indian team in the first One-day international played at McKay
on Tuesday.
Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to
field first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they bowled wayward deliveries
that Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma took advantage of it. The debutant Darice
Brown got the breakthrough dismissing Verma with a short delivery into the
hands of Alyssa Healy. Mandhana and Verma added 31 runs in just 3.3 overs.
Soon after, Brown got the big wicket of another opener Smriti
Mandhana with a simple catch to Haynes at backward point to leave India in some
trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, Indian women made 51 for 2.
After the field restrictions, the Australian bowlers did not
allow Bhatia and Mithali Raj to score runs freely. Yastika Bhatia making her
ODI debut impressed with her strokes while Raj also managed some runs against disciplined
Australian bowling. Brown coming into her second spell struck immediately dismissing
Bhatia with a simple catch to Haynes at backward point. Bhatia and Raj added 77
runs for the 3rd wicket.
Brown peppered the Indian batters with short deliveries. Deepti
Sharma was given a reprieve as Meg Lanning dropped a simple chance to dismiss
Deepti Sharma. Soon, Brown got her fourth wicket with another short delivery as
Warhem took a decent catch at square leg.
Pooja Vastrakar showed intent right from word go while Raj
looked steady reaching a half-century off 92 balls. Mithali Raj tried to come
down the track but was eventually stumped by Healy for a well-made 63.
The Indian team lost momentum as they lost another wicket of
Pooja Vastrakar chipping an easy catch to Molineux. Sneha Rana also could not
contribute bowled by Darlington. Richa Ghosh and Jhulan Goswami provided some impetus
with lusty blows with 17 runs in the 49th over as both batters
smashed 1 six each. Goswami’s cameo knock came to an end stumped by Healy. Goswami
and Ghosh added 45 runs for the 8th wicket. Indian women’s team
posted a respectable 225 for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 226 runs to win, Alyssa Healy and Haynes started off
cautiously against Goswami and Meghna. Healy took the attack on Indian bowlers especially
against Pooja Vastrakar hitting her for boundaries. The explosive batter Healy never
looked in trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, Australian openers scored
52 for 0.
Healy smashed Poonam Yadav with ease and reached her fifty
off 56 balls. On the other hand, Haynes looked in great comfort making life
tough for the Indian bowlers. The Australian openers kept the scoreboard
ticking hitting boundaries. Poonam Yadav eventually struck getting rid of Healy
trying to clear the shot but gave an easy catch to Vastrakar at mid-off. Healy and
Haynes added 126 runs.
Australian captain Meg Lanning came to the crease and looked
in great touch. Haynes completed her fifty off just 56 balls. Both experienced batters
were able to take singles and hit boundaries at will. Lanning also reached her
fifty off 67 balls. Haynes hit the winning runs with a boundary to help
Australian women register an emphatic 9 wicket win with 54 balls to spare. Lanning
and Haynes put on unbeaten 101 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Australian women 227 for 1 in 41 overs (Haynes 93*, Healy
77, Lanning 53*, Poonam Yadav 1/58) beat Indian women 225 for 8 in 20 overs (Mithali
Raj 63, Yastika Bhatia 35, Darcie Brown 4/33, Hannah Darlington 2/29) by 9
wickets.
