IPL 2021 Match 30: Gaikwad’s knock and bowlers help CSK register easy win
A brilliant knock by Gaikwad and a great bowling effort helped
Chennai Super Kings start the 2nd leg of IPL 2021 with a comfortable
win played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Sunday.
Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was a disastrous start as Faf du Plessis fell in the
very first over off Trent Boult’s bowling. Milne dismissed Moeen Ali hitting
the toe end with a low diving catch by Tiwary to leave CSK in big trouble. Things
became more worst as Ambati Rayudu was hit on his elbow and had to leave the
field.
Suresh Raina's edgy innings came to an end providing an easy
catch to Rahul Chahar leaving CSK in tatters. Things became worst for CSK
as Dhoni walked in disbelief as a decent shot went into the hands of Boult and
ended the first six overs at 24 for 4.
Quinton de Kock dropped a tough chance to dismiss Gaikwad
along with Jadeja. At the end of the first timeout, CSK scored 35 for 4.
Gaikwad put the pressure on CSK batsmen and hit bad balls away for boundaries.
On other hand, Jadeja kept giving strike to well set Gaikwad. Both batsmen made
sure that they don’t lose any wickets and end 2nd timeout at 87 for
4.
After the timeout, Gaikwad looked impressive and reached
fifty off 41 balls. Bumrah finally broke through getting rid of Jadeja as
Pollard took an easy catch. Gaikwad and Jadeja added 81 runs for the 5th
wicket to steady the ship for CSK. Bravo and Gaikwad smashed 24 runs off Boult
in the 19th over including 3 sixes and 1 boundary. Bravo’s cameo came to
end as a simple catch to Krunal Pandya. Bravo and Gaikwad added 39 runs for the
6th wicket. Gaikwad smashed six off Bumrah helping CSK recover to
post 156 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 157 to win, Quinton de Kock began off briskly with
cracking shots of Josh Hazlewood. He was looking good before Deepak Chahar
dismissed him via review. The umpire gave it not out and Dhoni decided to
review immediately, it was overturned to out hitting the stumps.
Anmolpreet Singh showed his class against top quality
bowling off Hazlewood hitting him for 2 fours and 1 six. Deepak Chahar eventually
castled Singh’s stump who tried to play a big shot. Shardul Thakur struck immediately
in his first over getting rid of Surya Kumar Yadav with a lovely running catch by
Faf du Plessis. At the end of the six overs, Mumbai Indians scored 41 for 3.
Ishan Kishan and Saurabh Tiwary steadied the ship for Mumbai
Indians taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. At end of the first
timeout, MI made 54 for 3.
Dwayne Bravo struck soon after the timeout as Kishan could
not keep shot down providing an easy catch to Suresh Raina. Stand-in captain Pollard
showed intent against Ravindra Jadeja while Tiwary looked solid.
After being smashed for 26 runs in the first 2 overs, Hazlewood
dismissed Pollard with a cracking delivery crashing the stumps to dent Mumbai
Indians' chase. Soon after, Krunal Pandya was run out for non-existence single.
Saurabh Tiwary looked in decent touch, but wickets fell from another end. At the end of the 2nd timeout, Mumbai Indians made 97 for
6. Adam Milne provided some resistance, but it was too little too late. Milne
and Tiwary added 40 runs for the 7th wicket. Dhoni dropped a simple
chance to get rid of Tiwary. Tiwary reached well deserved fifty off 40 balls.
Bravo then got rid of Rahul Chahar to leave CSK on verge of a big win. Chennai
Super Kings produced a brilliant performance after being reduced to 24 for 4.
CSK 156 for 6 in 20 overs (Gaikwad 88*, Bravo 23, Milne
2/21, Bumrah 2/33) beat Mumbai Indians 136 for 8 in 20 overs (Saurabh Tiwary
50*, Bravo 3/25, Chahar 2/19) by 20 runs.
