IPL 2021 Match 44: CSK qualify for the playoffs with a convincing win over SRH
Chennai Super Kings became the first team this year to
qualify for the playoffs stage with a comprehensive win over SRH played at Sharjah
Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Thursday.
CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to field
first. Wriddihman Saha started the innings off to a brilliant start taking on
CSK bowlers especially Deepak Chahar. Josh Hazlewood got rid of last-match hero
Jason Roy providing an easy catch to Dhoni. SRH captain Williamson showed some
intent. At the end of the first six overs, Williamson and Saha helped SRH score
41 for 1.
Dwayne Bravo deceived Williamson with a slower delivery
given out by the umpire. CSK bowlers kept the pressure on SRH batsmen especially
on Priyam Garg struggling for runs. Bravo struck again to get rid of Garg to
leave SRH in trouble. The pressure built on Saha as he attempted to hit another
big shot as Dhoni took a simple catch. Abishek Sharma and Abdul Samad took some
before providing some momentum to the innings. At the end of the 2nd
timeout, SRH scored 102 for 4.
After being hit for a six, Hazlewood dismissed Abishek
Sharma and Samad in the same over to derail SRH innings. Sharma and Samad added
35 runs for the 5th wicket. Jason Holder was caught at the boundary.
Rashid Khan hit some vital runs in death overs to help SRH post 134 for 7 in 20
overs.
Chasing 135 runs to win, it was a cautious start by du
Plessis and Gaikwad before launching an attack on SRH bowlers especially Bhuvneshwar
Kumar. CSK openers kept picking gaps making life tough for the opposition. Gaikwad
was given out by the umpire and on review, it was overturned to not out as it
gloves. At the end of the first six overs, CSK raced away to 47 for 0. With
that, the first timeout was called.
After the timeout, Gaikwad and du Plessis kept the momentum
going for CSK. Jason Holder got the breakthrough for SRH as Williamson took a
good catch at mid-off to end a match-winning partnership of 75 runs. Moeen Ali
came to the crease giving most of the strike for Faf du Plessis making sure
that CSK are on course for a win.
At the end of the 2nd timeout, CSK posted 103 for
1. SRH showed great courage and fightback skills as they picked 3 quick wickets
including two in an over by Jason Holder.
MS Dhoni was not able to time the ball after entering the
crease. Ambati Rayudu hit vital boundaries off Siddarth Kaul's bowling to ease
pressure on CSK. With 3 runs required, Dhoni smashed a six to help CSK win the
match by 6 wickets.
CSK 139 for 4 in 19.4 overs (Gaikwad 45, du Plessis 41,
Holder 3/27) beat SRH 134 for 7 in 20 overs ( Saha 44, Hazlewood 3/24, Bravo
