Denmark Open 2021: Indian challenge ends
The Indian challenge ended as both PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma lost in the quarterfinals of Super 1000 Denmark Open 2021 played at Odense Park, Denmark on Friday.
Sameer Verma had to retire hurt after the first game against
Indonesian Tommy Suigarto. It was a good performance by Sameer who showed great
skills with smashes and drops shots making life tough for the opponent. Suigarto
showed intent winning the first game easily at 21-17 before Sameer withdraw from the match due to an injury.
The Indian had a decent outing winning against Indian in the
first round and then stunned the world number 3, Anders Antonsen, in two straight
games to move into the quarterfinals.
PV Sindhu also did not perform to expectations as she lost
to An Se Young of South Korea in two straight games. The Indian looked out of
sorts with An taking advantage.
The Indian shuttlers played in the Sudirman Cup and then the prestigious
Thomas and Uber Cup. It was not an impressive performance as PV Sindhu and Sameer
Verma reached the top 8 stages.
It was an aggressive start by the Korean taking an 11-3 lead
at the interval. After the break, the Indian committed lots of unforced errors
on the net. An won the first game easily at 21-11.
Sindhu showed some improvement in the second game as she put
some pressure on Korean player. Despite her efforts, World Champion committed a few
more errors as An took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, it was
one-way traffic that took points in succession to dominate Indian.
An won the second game easily at 21-12 to knock Sindhu out
of the tournament. It was a disappointing performance by Indian shuttlers as
only Sindhu and Sameer Verma made it into the quarterfinals stage of this prestigious
tournament.
