French Open 2021: Good Day for Indian shuttlers

 The Indian shuttlers had a good opening day of Super 1000 French Open 2021 played in Paris, France on Wednesday.

Kidambi Srikanth played his heart out before losing to World number 1 Kento Momota in thrilling three games. It was a great start by the Indian taking an early 4-0 lead initially before Momota leveled the score. Srikanth then took an 8-5 lead before the Japanese took a slender 11-10 lead. After the interval, Momota took points in succession as Indian fought back strongly to level the scores at 18-18. The World number 1 won the first game at 21-18.

It was a see-saw battle in the second game as both players took alternate points. At the mid-game interval, Momota took an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Momota showed class and had two match points before Srikanth took four points in succession to game into the decider.

In the deciding game, both players showed their intent as Srikanth took a 9-6 lead. At the mid-game interval, Momota took a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, the Indian went on putting pressure on the World number 1 with a 19-17 advantage. Srikanth committed a few unforced errors to help the Japanese win the match at 21-19.

Sourabh Verma defeated Y Coelho of Brazil in a closely fought two sets. The first game saw both players fighting for each point before the Indian won it 22-20. It was another closely fought 2nd game before Sourabh won it 21-19 to move into 2nd round. He will face Kento Nishimoto of Japan.

Lakshya Sen won his first-round match easily against N Nguyen of Ireland in two straight games 21-10, 21-16. Sen will take on Loh K Y

Parupalli Kashyap and HS Prannoy lost their respective matches. Kashyap lost to Brice Levederz of France in three games by 17-21, 21-17, 11-21. Prannoy was outplayed by Tiou Chou Chen in two straight games by 11-21, 14-21.

PV Sindhu had no problems defeating Jakobsen of Denmark in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by the Indian winning it by 21-15, 21-18 to move into the second round. She will face L Christophen of Denmark.

Saina Nehwal’s poor form continued as she lost to Takashi of Japan. She lost the first game badly by 11-21. With the scoreboard reading 2-9, Saina retired midway.

In the men’s doubles section, Chirag Shetty and RankiReddy defeated Lee J-h and Yang in three games. The Chinese Taipei pair won the first game easily at 21-18 before the Indian pair fought back strongly to win the next two games by 21-17, 21-13 to move into the second round. They will face the Indian pairing of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun defeating J Magee and Reynolds in two straight games.

The mixed doubles pair of Ponnappa and RankiReddy defeated Thyrri and Surrow of Denmark in two straight games. It was a closely fought first game as the Indian pair won it 21-19. Ponnappa and Reddy won the second game easily by 21-15 to move into 2nd round. They will take on P Jordan and Oktavanti of Indonesia.
