ICC World Cup 2021 Super 12 Group 1: Australia thrash Sri Lanka to register second win

 The Australian Cricket Team produced a dominating display of cricket as they defeated Sri Lanka easily played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday.

Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for Australia as Cummins struck early getting rid of Pathum Nissanka caught by Warner. Kusal Perera and Asalanaka looked in sublime touch putting pressure on the Aussies bowling line-up with boundaries keeping the momentum going on for Sri Lanka. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka raced away to 53 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Perera and Asalanaka maintained the momentum for Sri Lanka. Zampa provided a much-needed breakthrough dismissing dangerous Asalanaka. It was an impressive partnership between these two batters as they put on 63 runs for the 2nd wicket. Australian bowlers rattled the middle order picking wickets at regular intervals. Mitchell Starc bowled a brilliant yorker to dismiss Perera. Zampa got rid of Avishka Fernando cheaply to leave Sri Lanka in some trouble.

Starc struck again to dismiss Hasaranga leaving Sri Lanka in deep trouble at 94 for 5. Bhaunka Rajapaksa looked in brilliant touch taking on Marcus Stoinis hitting for 17 runs while Shanaka struggled for timing. Cummins got the wicket of Sri Lankan captain Shanaka. Shanaka and Rajapaksa added 40 runs for the 6th wicket. Rajapaksa provided some much-needed momentum for Sri Lanka helping them to post 154 for 6 in 20 overs.

It was a brilliant start for Australian openers as David Warner and Aaron Finch put the Lankan bowlers under immense pressure right from word go. Warner was given a reprieve as Kusal Perera dropped a simple chance. Finch looked in sublime touch taking on Lankan bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Australia raced away to 63 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Finch and Warner maintained the momentum for Australia. Hasaranga provided breakthrough getting rid of Finch taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Australian openers added 70 runs laying a strong foundation for a massive win. Maxwell was promoted to number 3 but fell cheaply caught by Fernando. Steve Smith looked in decent touch while Warner showed returned to form hitting boundaries.

Warner showed intent and completed his fifty off just 31 balls. Sri Lankan captain Shanaka struck getting rid of Warner. Warner and Smith added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. It was one-way traffic as Smith and Stoinis completed the job-winning it easily by 7 wickets.

Australia 155 for 3 in 17 overs ( Warner 65, Finch 37, Hasaranga 2/22) beat Sri Lanka 154 for 6 in 20 overs ( Asalanaka 35, Kusal Perera 35, Adam Zampa 2/12) by 7 wickets.

For his 2 for 12 in 4 overs, Adam Zampa was named the man of the match award. Australia registered their 2nd successive win of the World Cup so far.
