ICC World Cup Super12 Group 1: Aslanka’s brilliance takes Sri Lanka to an impressive win

 Sri Lanka started the ICC World Cup Super League stage on a winning note defeating Bangladesh in high scoring thriller played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Sunday.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Liton Das and Naim Islam gave Bangladesh a decent start putting pressure on the Lankan opening bowling pair. Both showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking. Das perished trying to utilize the field restrictions caught by Shanaka at mid-off. At the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh posted 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Shakib AL Hasan showed intent hitting 2 boundaries before being castled by Chamika Karunaratne. The experienced Rahim along with Naim Islam took the attack on Lankan bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking. With the pressure on the batters, Rahim kept hitting big shots as well as Naim. Naim reached his fifty off 44 balls maintaining momentum for Bangladesh. Binuara Fernando got the breakthrough with a simple return catch to the bowler. Naim and Rahim added 73 runs for the 3rd wicket. Rahim upped the ante completing his half-century off 32 balls. Kumara bowled great yorkers running out Afif Hossain.

Rahim and Mahmudullah ensured that Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 171 for 4. Rahim led from the front with a great knock.

Chasing 172 runs to win, Sri Lanka lost an early wicket of Kusal Perera bowled by Nasum Ahmed. Asalanaka kept on hitting boundaries and sixes with ease putting the Bangladeshi bowlers under pressure. Nissanka also looked in great touch maintaining the required run rate. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka scored 54 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Asalanaka and Nissanka continued to keep the momentum going on for Sri Lanka. Shakib AL Hasan struck twice in the same over getting wickets of Nissanka and Avishka Fernando. Nissanka and Asalanaka added 69 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sri Lanka went into trouble as Hasaranga was caught at the boundary by Saifuddin. Asalanaka looked in decent touch to complete fifty off 32 balls.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa took the attack to Saifuddin hitting him for 22 runs to help Sri Lanka’s chase under control. Rajapaksa completed his fifty off 28 balls. Bangladesh catching was not great as Liton Das dropped two simple chances. Nasum Ahmed struck getting the wicket of Rajapaksa but did not yield any results as both batters put on 86 runs for the 5th wicket. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 7 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka 172 for 5 in 18.5 overs (Asalanaka 80*, Rajapaksa 53, Shakib AL Hasan 2/17, Nasum Ahmed 2/29) beat Bangladesh 171 for 4 in 20 overs ( Mohammad Naim 62, Rahim 57*, Kumara 1/29) by 5 wickets.

For his unbeaten 80 off 49 balls, Asalanaka was awarded the man of the match award. 









Sri Lanka won their opening match by 5 wickets against Bangladesh
