ICC World T20 2021 Group 2: Impressive Pakistan makes two out of two
Pakistan made two wins out of two with a comprehensive win over New Zealand with an impressive all-around effort played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Tuesday.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and decided to
field first. It was a decent start by New Zealand openers as Daryl Mitchell put
pressure on Pak opening bowlers. On other hand, Martin Guptill looked out of sorts.
Haris Rauf struck in his first over getting rid of dangerous Guptill with a brilliant yorker as Kiwis openers added 36 runs. At the end of the
first six overs, New Zealand scored 42 for 1.
Soon after the field restrictions, Pakistani bowlers did not
allow Kiwis batters to score runs easily. Imad Wasim got rid of Mitchell caught
by Fakhar Zaman. Due to disciplined bowling effort by Pakistani bowlers, Williamson struggled with his timing. Kiwi captain Williamson was given out, on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the bat. Neesham also fell cheaply caught by Zaman at deep midwicket to
leave Kiwis struggling. Kane Williamson and Devon Conway steadied the ship
keeping the scoreboard ticking. A superb piece of fielding by Hasan Ali ran out Williamson
to dent Kiwi’s innings. Williamson and Conway added 34 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled with accuracy not allowing
Kiwis batters to score runs easily in the death overs. It was a superb bowling
effort by Pakistan restricting New Zealand for a modest total of 134 for 8 in
20 overs.
In reply to 135, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan began off
steadily. Tim Southee produced a peach to get rid of Pakistan captain Azam. At
the end of the first six overs, Pakistan scored just 30 runs.
After the field restrictions, Kiwis bowlers kept a tight leash
against Zaman and Mohammad Rizwan. Ish Sodhi struck for New Zealand dismissing
Zaman. Zaman was given not out by the umpire; on review, it was overturned to out to
leave Pakistan struggling a little bit. Mohammad Hafeez looked impressive with
his footwork making life tough for New Zealand. Devon Conway took a superb
diving catch to dismiss Hafeez to bring back New Zealand into the match.
Sodhi struck to dismiss Rizwan putting Pakistan under pressure.
New Zealand bowlers kept it tight making life tough for the opposition. Boult got
the wicket of Imad Wasim trying to hit a reverse sweep. Asif Ali changed the momentum for Pakistan hitting
2 sixes off Tim Southee’s over keeping Pakistan on course. Shoaib Malik joined
in the party with another huge shot against Santer.
Asif Ali and Shoaib Malik ensured that Pakistan chase down
this modest total with ease. Both Pakistan batters added unbeaten 48 runs for
the 6th wicket.
Pakistan 135 for 5 in 18.5 overs ( Rizwan 33, Asif Ali 27*,
Ish Sodhi 2/28) beat New Zealand 134 for 8 in 20 overs ( Mitchell 27, Conway
27, Haris Rauf 4/22) by 5 wickets.
For his figures of 4 for 22 in 4 overs, Rauf was named the
man of the match award.
Pakistan beat New Zealand to register their 2nd successive win
