ICC World T20 2021 Super 12 Group 1: Australia seal a thrilling win in the opening match
Australia sealed a thrilling win over South Africa in a low-scoring thriller played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to field
first. Temba Bavuma began the match with 2 brilliant boundaries off Mitchell
Starc’s over. Soon after, Glenn Maxwell castled Bavuma’s stump. Josh Hazlewood was
bought into the attack and produced a peach to get rid of Rassie Van der
Dussen. De Kock fell hitting pad onto stumps to leave South Africa struggling
big time. At the end of the first six overs, South Africa scored 29 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Klassen and Markram tried to
steady the ship for South Africa with boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Cummins struck getting rid of Klassen taking leading edge to Smith at backward
point to leave South Africa in trouble at 46 for 4. David Miller and Markram
kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Adam
Zampa struck twice in one over getting wickets of Miller and Dwaine Pretorius to
put South Africa under immense pressure. Miller and Markram added 34 runs for
the 5th wicket.
Keshav Maharaj was run out via while trying to take a single
for overthrow. Markram hit some vital blows before being caught at deep midwicket.
Kagiso Rabada provided momentum for South Africa with cracking shots. Australia
bowlers did a brilliant job restricting South Africa to 118.
Chasing 119 runs to win, Aaron Finch fell cheaply slashing a
shot straight to Rabada at third man. Rabada and Nortje bowled with pace
troubling the Australian top order. Warner looked in decent touch before being caught by
Klassen to leave them struggling. At the end of the first six overs, Australia
scored 28 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Keshav Maharaj was bought into
the attack and bowled stump to stump. Marsh was brilliantly caught at deep
midwicket by Van der Dussen. Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell steadied the ship keeping
the scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries. Maxwell was given a reprieve as de
Kock missed a run-out chance.
Soon after, Maxwell and Smith kept Australia in the hunt for a
victory. A brilliant catch diving by Markrarm resulted in the wicket of Smith.
Smith and Maxwell added 42 runs for the 4th wicket. Shamsi got the
big wicket of Maxwell trying to hit a reverse sweep.
The match went right down the wire as Marcus Stoinis and
Matthew Wade kept calm hitting boundaries at vital times. With 8 runs required
off the final over, both Australian batters held their nerves to help Australia
register a thrilling 5 wicket win with 2 balls to spare. Stoinis and Wade added
unbeaten 40 runs for the 6th wicket.
Australia 121 for 5 in 19.4 overs ( Steve Smith 35, Stoinis
24*, Nortje 2/21) beat South Africa 118 for 9 in 20 overs ( Markram 40, Rabada
19*, Hazlewood 2/19, Zampa 2/21) by 5 wickets.
For his 2 for 19 in 4 overs, Josh Hazlewood was named the
man of the match award.
