ICC World T20 2021 Super 12 Group 1: West Indies stay alive in the tournament with a thrilling win
The defending Champions West Indies put their efforts to defeat Bangladesh in a thrilling contest played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Friday.
Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and decided to
field first. Mehedi Hasan and Taskin Ahmed did not allow West Indies openers
Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis to score runs easily with tight lines and lengths.
Shakib AL Hasan missed a golden run-out chance to dismiss Gayle. Soon after,
Lewis was dismissed taking leading edge to Rahim.
Mehedi Hasan castled Chris Gayle stumps to leave West Indies
in some trouble. West Indies scored 29 for 2 at the end of the first six overs.
After the field restrictions, Hetymer also fell caught by Soumya Sarkar leaving
West Indies struggling. Mehedi Hasan dropped a simple return catch to get rid
of Roston Chase. Kieron Pollard looked out of sorts and decided to retire hurt.
Andre Russell was run-out at the non-striker end hitting the boot of Taskin
Ahmed.
Nicolas Pooran came to the crease and put the pressure right
back on the Bangladeshi bowlers hitting 2 sixes each off Shakib AL Hasan and Mahedi
Hasan. Shoriful Islam bowled a brilliant 19th over taking wickets of
Nicolas Pooran and well-set Roston Chase. Chase and Pooran added 57 runs for
the 6th wicket. Jason Holder looked in superb touch as well Pollard came
back to hit 3 sixes in the final over to help West Indies post 142 for 7 in 20
overs. The Bangladeshi catching was poor as they dropped so many catches.
In reply to 143 runs to win, Bangladesh opened the innings
with experienced Shakib AL Hasan and Naim Islam. West Indies bowlers kept it
tight not allowing openers to score runs freely. Russell struck in his first over
getting the wicket of Shakib AL Hasan. Holder then got rid of Naim taking the inside edge onto the stumps to leave Bangladesh struggling. At the end of the
first six overs, Bangladesh made 29 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Das and Soumya Sarkar steadied
the ship somewhat keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and singles. Dwayne
Bravo struck for West Indies getting the wicket of Sarkar ending 31 runs stand
for the 3rd wicket with Sarkar. Das looked in great touch putting
bad balls away for boundaries. Rampaul dismissed Rahim to leave Bangladesh
struggling. Rahim and Das added 30 runs for the 4th wicket.
The captain Mahmudullah and Das kept the pressure back on
West Indies bowlers with boundaries and kept the scoreboard ticking. Bravo
struck dismissing well-set Das in the 19th over. Das and Mahmudullah
added 40 runs for the 5th wicket.
It was a brilliant effort by Andre Russell to give away just
9 runs. The match went down the last ball as Russell did not concede a boundary
off the final delivery. West Indies won a thrilling contest by 3 runs. Nicolas
Pooran captained for West Indies as Pollard did not field.
West Indies 142 for 7 in 20 overs (Nicolas Pooran 40, Chase
39, Mahedi Hasan 2/27, Islam 2/20) beat Bangladesh 139 for 5 in 20 overs (
Liton Das 44, Mahmudullah 31*, Holder 1/22) by 3 runs.
For his quickfire 40 off 22 balls, Nicolas Pooran was named
the man of the match award. West Indies registered their first win on the World T20
Super 12 stage.
