ICC World T20 Qualifiers: Bangladesh becomes 2nd team to qualify for the Super 12 stage

Bangladesh became the 2nd team to qualify for the Super 12 stage after a resounding win over debutants Papua New Guinea in an important match played at Al Amerat Stadium, Muscat on Thursday.

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Mohammad Naim flicked straight into the hands of Bau at deep midwicket. Shakib AL Hasan came to the crease and took a few balls to settle before putting pressure on the PNG bowlers. Liton Das showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Shakib. At the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh scored 45 for 1.

A superb diving catch by Bau ended the innings for Liton Das. Das and Shakib AL Hasan added 50 runs for the 2nd wicket. Shakib put pressure on PNG spinners while Rahim hit straight into the hands of Hiri to leave Bangladesh struggling. Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah came with positive intent right from word go while Shakib kept the scoreboard ticking. Charles Amini took a superb diving catch at long-on ended in a brilliant knock by Shakib. Mahmudullah was simply in a stunning mood putting Chad Sopper under pressure with big shots. Afif Hossain also kept the momentum going for Bangladesh.

Mahmudullah completed his fifty off 27 balls and was soon caught at deep square leg. The umpire checked for waste height no-ball, but it was called out. Mahmudullah and Afif added 43 runs for the 5th wicket. Papua New Guinea bowlers did a superb job by picking wickets of Afif and Nurul Hasan. After bowling decent first four balls, Saifuddin smashed Soper for big runs to help Bangladesh post a massive total of 181 for 7 in 20 overs.

In reply, Papua New Guinea batters failed to make use of field restrictions. Bangladesh fielding was brilliant as Nurul Hasan took a one-handed catch getting the wicket of Asaad Vala. Mohammad Naim took a superb catch at long-on to dismiss Charles Amini. Shakib AL Hasan broke the backbone of the PNG batting line-up. At the end of the first six overs, PNG looked in disarray at 17 for 4.

Bangladesh kept on picking wickets at regular intervals to leave PNG in tatters at 29 for 7. Doriga was impressive with his strokes and bowled out PNG for 97 in 19.3 overs. Doriga was the top scorer for PNG with 46 not out.

Bangladesh 181 for 7 in 20 overs (Mahmudullah 50, Shakib AL Hasan 46, Morea 2/26, Ravu 2/40) beat Papua New Guinea 97 in 19.3 overs ( Doriga 46*, Shakib AL Hasan 4/9) by 84 runs.
