ICC World T20 qualifiers Match 8: Sri Lanka qualify for the Super 12 stage with a resounding win
Sri Lanka was at its best as they defeated Ireland by a big margin to register their second successive win played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and decided to
field first. The decision paid off as Joshua Little and Paul Stirling 38 rattled
Sri Lankan top order getting wickets of Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, and
Avishka Fernando to leave them in big trouble at 8 for 3. Hasaranga played with
intent right from word go making life tough for Ireland bowlers. Nissanka also
kept the momentum going on for the Lankans. At the end of the first six overs,
Sri Lanka scored 41 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Hasaranga and Nissanka kept
the pressure on with brilliant strokes against Ireland bowlers. Hasaranga
showed his intent against pacers and spinners completing his fifty off 38
balls. Nissanka and Hasaranga hit boundaries at will putting pressure back on the Ireland team. Adair struck for Ireland getting rid of Hasaranga with a good
catch by Young. Hasaranga and Nissanka added 123 runs for the 4th
wicket. Ireland cameback strongly with wickets in the end. Dasun Shanaka
provided the late impetus with 1 six and 1 boundary to help Sri Lanka post 171 for
7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 173 runs to win, the experienced Kevin O Brien fell
cheaply caught by Theekshana at fine leg in the very first over. Kumara,
Chameera bowled at a quick pace not allowing Ireland batters to hit runs easily. Theekshana
grabbed the wicket of Paul Stirling to leave Ireland in some trouble. After a
brilliant batting effort, Hasaranga dismissed Delany with good delivery. At
the end of the first six overs, Ireland made 41 for 3.
Balbirnie provided some resistance with attacking strokes
while Curtis Campher struggled against top-quality Sri Lankan bowling.
Theeskhana got the breakthrough dismissing Campher. Campher and Balbirnie added
53 runs for the 4th wicket. It was a superb bowling effort by Sri
Lanka to put Ireland's batters under immense pressure.
A superb direct throw by Chameera ended in the wicket of
Mark Adair. Avishka Fernando took a good
catch to get rid of Balbirnie. Chameera produced a stunning yorker to dismiss
Craig Young. Chamika Karurante ended the innings by getting rid of Joshua Little
bowling out Ireland for 101.
Sri Lanka 171 for 7 in 20 overs ( Hasaranga 71, Nissanka 61,
Joshua Little 4/23, Adair 2/35) beat Ireland 101 in 18.3 overs ( Balbirnie 41,
Campher 24, Theekshana 3/17, Kumara 2/22) by 70 runs.
For his all-around efforts, Hasaranga was named the man of
the match award. With this win, Sri Lanka qualified for the Super 12 stage and the Netherlands was knocked out with 2 losses.
