ICC World T20 qualifiers: Namibia creates history

Playing their first T20 World Cup, Namibia became the fourth team to qualify for the Super 12 stage after defeating Ireland in a thriller played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Friday.

Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie won the toss and decided to bat first. Stirling and Kevin O Brien put the Namibian bowlers under pressure hitting boundaries against the new ball. Stirling was severely taking on the pacers and Scholtz. At the end of the first six overs, Ireland openers scored 55 for 0.

Scholtz got the breakthrough getting rid of dangerous Paul Stirling with a lovely catch at long-on by Eaton. Stirling and O Brien added 62 runs for the opening wicket. The Namibian bowlers did not allow Ireland batters to score runs easily with disciplined bowling. O Brien was caught at deep square.

Andy Balbirnie and Gareth Delany were not able to rotate the strike. Namibia did not take a review for LBW as Balbirnie was found plumb in front. With the scoreboard not increasing, Delany was bowled by David Wiese. Frylinck took two wickets of Balirbine and Curtis Campher to dent Ireland scoring. Namibia did not allow Ireland to score runs on a slow pitch. Ireland posted 125 for 8 in 20 overs.

In reply to 126, Craig Williams hit some lovely shots against disciplined bowling by Ireland bowlers. On other hand, Green struggled to time the ball. A brilliant catch by Kevin O Brien at mid-on resulted in the wicket of Williams. At the end of the first six overs, Namibia scored 27 for 1.

Zane Green and captain Erasmus were not able to score runs easily against disciplined Ireland bowling. Mark Adair went off the field as Kevin O Brien bowled his overs. After the drinks break, Erasmus some lovely boundaries keeping pressure on Ireland bowlers. Another brilliant catch by Kevin O Brien got rid of Green. Green and Erasmus added 48 runs for the 2nd wicket.

The experienced David Wiese took the attack hitting Craig Young for 2 sixes in an over to change the momentum for Namibia. Erasmus showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Wiese. Erasmus kept calm and reached fifty off 48 balls. Wiese hit winning runs helping Namibia qualify for the Super 12 stage for the first time.

Wiese and Erasmus added unbeaten 53 runs for the 3rd wicket. Namibia performed brilliantly winning against Netherlands and Ireland. They finished 2nd in Group B and placed against India, Pakistan, Scotland, Afghanistan, and New Zealand.
