ICC World T20 qualifiers: Namibia creates history
Playing their first T20 World Cup, Namibia became the fourth team to qualify for the Super 12 stage after defeating Ireland in a thriller played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Friday.
Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie won the toss and decided to
bat first. Stirling and Kevin O Brien put the Namibian bowlers under pressure hitting
boundaries against the new ball. Stirling was severely taking on the pacers and
Scholtz. At the end of the first six overs, Ireland openers scored 55 for 0.
Scholtz got the breakthrough getting rid of dangerous Paul
Stirling with a lovely catch at long-on by Eaton. Stirling and O Brien added 62
runs for the opening wicket. The Namibian bowlers did not allow Ireland batters
to score runs easily with disciplined bowling. O Brien was caught at deep
square.
Andy Balbirnie and Gareth Delany were not able to rotate the
strike. Namibia did not take a review for LBW as Balbirnie was found plumb in
front. With the scoreboard not increasing, Delany was bowled by David Wiese. Frylinck
took two wickets of Balirbine and Curtis Campher to dent Ireland scoring. Namibia
did not allow Ireland to score runs on a slow pitch. Ireland posted 125 for 8
in 20 overs.
In reply to 126, Craig Williams hit some lovely shots
against disciplined bowling by Ireland bowlers. On other hand, Green struggled
to time the ball. A brilliant catch by Kevin O Brien at mid-on resulted in the
wicket of Williams. At the end of the first six overs, Namibia scored 27 for 1.
Zane Green and captain Erasmus were not able to score runs
easily against disciplined Ireland bowling. Mark Adair went off the field as
Kevin O Brien bowled his overs. After the drinks break, Erasmus some lovely
boundaries keeping pressure on Ireland bowlers. Another brilliant catch by
Kevin O Brien got rid of Green. Green and Erasmus added 48 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
The experienced David Wiese took the attack hitting Craig
Young for 2 sixes in an over to change the momentum for Namibia. Erasmus showed
intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Wiese. Erasmus kept calm and
reached fifty off 48 balls. Wiese hit winning runs helping Namibia qualify for
the Super 12 stage for the first time.
Wiese and Erasmus added unbeaten 53 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Namibia performed brilliantly winning against Netherlands and Ireland.
They finished 2nd in Group B and placed against India, Pakistan, Scotland,
Afghanistan, and New Zealand.
Namibia 126 for 2 in 18.3 overs (Erasmus 53*, Wiese 28*,
Curtis Campher 2/14) beat Ireland 125 for 8 in 20 overs (Stirling 38, O Brien
25, Frylinck 3/21, Wiese 2/22) by 8 wickets.
With this win, Namibia made it into the Super 12 stage. For
his all-around efforts, David Wiese was named the man of the match award.
