ICC World T20 qualifiers: Scotland finish top of Group B

 Scotland finished at the top of Group A with a dominating win over hosts Oman in the final game played at Al Amerat Stadium, Muscat on Thursday.

Oman captain Zeeshan Masqood won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost an early wicket of Jatinder Singh via run out. Sharif got the wicket of Prajapati to leave Oman struggling at 13 for 2. Scotland bowlers did not allow Oman batters to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Oman scored 37 for 2.

Aqib Ilyas looked in decent touch putting the Scotland bowlers under some pressure. Leask dismissed the dangerous Aqib. Aqib and Nadeem added 38 runs for the 3rd wicket. Scotland bowlers did not allow Oman batters to score runs easily grabbing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Zeeshan Masqood’s knock, the rest of the batting line-up failed to deliver. Scotland bowled out Oman for 122 in 20 overs.

In reply to 123 runs to win, Munsey and Kyle Coetzer showed intent right from the word go putting Oman bowlers under pressure. Fayyaz Butt struck Oman getting rid of dangerous Munsey. Scotland openers put on 33 runs in quick time.

Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer remained calm putting the bad deliveries for boundaries. On the other hand, Matthew Cross struggled against Oman spinners. Before the end of the drinks break, Khawar Ali dismissed Coetzer with a peach. Coetzer and Cross added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. Cross survived a close LBW shout given not out by the umpire and the decision was retained to not out it was going above the stumps.

Richard Berrington was in brilliant touch taking on Khawar Ali in his final over. Matthew Cross also joined in the party kept the momentum going for Scotland. Berrington hit the winning runs with a six to help Scotland register an 8 wicket win. Berrington and Cross added unbeaten 48 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Scotland 123 for 2 in 17 overs (Coetzer 41, Berrington 31*, Khawar Ali 1/27) beat Oman 122 in 20 overs ( Aqib Ilyas 37, Zeeshan Masqood 34, Josh Davey 3/25, Sharif 2/25) by 8 wickets.

For his 3 for 25 in 4 overs, Josh Davey was named the man of the match award. With this win, Scotland has been clubbed with Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Afghanistan in Group 2 of the Super 12 stage.
