ICC World T20 Super 12 stage Group 2: All-round Afghanistan thrash Scotland
Afghanistan started their 2021 World Cup journey on a resounding note defeating Scotland by a massive margin played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Monday.
Afghanistan's newly appointed captain Mohammad Nabi won the
toss and decided to bat first. The decision paid off as Mohammad Shahzad and
Hazratullah Zazai provided a cracking start with boundaries keeping the Scotland
bowlers under pressure. Before the end of field restrictions, Zazai was dismissed
for a quickfire 22 giving Afghan a great start. Shahzad and Zazai added 54 runs
for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Afghanistan scored
55 for 1.
Gurbaz came to the crease and put Scotland bowlers under
immense pressure with attacking strokes. Zazai's attacking innings came to an end
providing an easy catch to Greaves. Gurbaz and Najibullah Zadran continued the Afghanistan
onslaught taking the attack. Leask bowled only one over giving away 18 runs.
Zadran and Gurbaz kept the pressure on Scotland bowlers keeping momentum for Afghan.
Zadran looked in great touch and completed his fifty off
just 30 balls. It was an amazing batting display by both Afghan batters to make
life tough for Scotland bowlers. Zadran and Gurbaz put on an attacking display of
batting adding 87 runs for the 3rd wicket. Nabi provided some late
flurry helping Afghanistan post a competitive total of 190 in 20 overs.
In reply to 191 runs to win, Munsey and Scotland captain
Kyle Coetzer started the innings brightly with boundaries keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Mujeeb Ur Rahman wrecked Scotland batting line-up getting wickets of Coetzer
and McLeod off successive deliveries. McLeod was given out by the umpire but on
review, the decision was retained to out. Mujeeb continued to show his skills making
life tough for Scotland batters getting wickets off Berrington, Munsey. Naveen
UL Haq got the other wicket dismissing Matthew Cross to leave Scotland on the
brink. At the end of the first six overs, Scotland made 37 for 6.
Rashid Khan came to the party as Scotland batters did not
have any clue. Afghanistan bowlers created a major impact bowling out them for
60 in 10.2 overs to register a thumping 130 runs win.
Afghanistan 190 for 4 in 20 overs ( Najibullah Zadran 59, Gurbaz
46, Sharif 2/33) beat Scotland 60 in 10.2 overs ( Munsey 25, Chris Greaves 12,
Mujeeb Ur Rahman 5/20, Rashid Khan 4/9) by 130 runs.
For his 5 for 20, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was awarded the man of
the match award.
