Hylo Open 2021: Indian shuttlers shine in quarterfinals
The two remaining Indian shuttlers showed their spine as they won their respective quarterfinals at the Super 500 tournament held in Germany played on Friday.
Kidambi Srikanth stunned the higher-ranked Na Ka Long Anus
of Hong Kong in three grueling games. It was an amazing performance by experienced
Indian shuttler struggling for form. The Indian dominated the first game-winning
it easily by 21-11. Srikanth did not allow his opponent to comeback.
Long made a strong comeback in the 2nd game as
the Indian committed a few unforced errors and won the 2nd game easily
at 21-12 to force the match into the decider. It was a closely fought third game as
both players fought for each point. Srikanth held his nerves to win the decider
at 21-19 to move into the semi-finals.
Before this quarterfinal, Srikanth defeated Watanabe in the first
round easily. The Indian held his nerves to win the 2nd round match
against Lee D-k of South Korea winning it 21-9, 19-21, 21-10. It was a great
performance by the Indian who showed great fighting spirit exiting in early
rounds of the Denmark Open and French Open. He will take on Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia.
Lakshya Sen also performed brilliantly defeating Junior
World Champion Vitisdarn of Thailand in three games. It was an amazing
performance by the young Indian winning the first game by 21-18. The second
game saw the Thai player making a strong comeback winning it by 21-12 to force
the match into the decider.
It was a closely fought third game as both players fought
for each point. The match ebbed and flow like a pendulum. Lakshya held his
nerves to win the deciding game at 21-19 to move into the semi-finals. Sen
defeated Roxuel of France in the first round easily by 21-17, 21-14, outplayed
Wang T W of Chinese Taipei in two straight games at 21-17, 21-15.
