ICC World T20 2021 2nd Semi-finals: Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis heroics helps Australia to a thrilling win

 It was a high-scoring game as Australia held their nerves to defeat unbeaten Pakistan in the 2nd semi-finals played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday.

Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. It was a positive start by Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan putting pressure on Australian opening bowlers. Both played some lovely strokes making life tough for the opponent. At the end of the first six overs, Pakistan made 47 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Adam Zampa was bought into the attack and put brakes on the openers. Before stroke of drinks break, Zampa got rid of Babar Azam caught by Warner at long-on. Pakistan openers added 71 runs for the opening wicket.

Fakhar Zaman came to the crease and took a few balls to settle. On the other hand, Rizwan upped the ante taking on Australian bowlers especially Adam Zampa. Hazlewood struggled with his rhythm as Zaman smashed him for runs. Rizwan looked composed completing a half-century off 41 balls. Rizwan and Zaman showed intent making life tough for the Australian bowlers. Rizwan’s innings came to end caught by Smith at mid-off. Rizwan and Fakhar added 72 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Pat Cummins bowled a superb 19th over giving away just 2 runs and grabbing the wicket of Asif Ali who was promoted to number 4. Fakhar Zaman was in a hitting mood smashing Starc for big sixes and completed fifty off 31 balls. Pakistan posted a competitive total of 176 for 4.

It was not an ideal start for Australia as Shaheen Shah Afridi produced a peach to dismiss Aaron Finch without opening his account. Afridi troubled Mitchell Marsh with brilliant deliveries. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh took the attack to Pakistani bowlers hitting him for big shots. At the end of the first six overs, Australia scored 52 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Shahbad Khan got the wicket of his first ball getting rid of Mitchell Marsh with a good catch by Asif Ali. Marsh and Warner added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. Steve Smith attacked the bowlers right from word go while Warner looked in a dangerous mood.

Khan struck again to dismiss Smith leaving Australia in trouble. Soon after the drinks, Khan got the wicket of well-set Warner. The ball did not take the edge as Warner decided not to review the decision.  The leg spinner got his fourth wicket getting rid of Maxwell caught by Haris Rauf putting the Australian team under pressure.

The Pakistani fielding was not great as they missed runouts of Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis. Wade and Stoinis looked in sublime touch hitting runs with ease against Rauf and Hasan Ali. After a horrible over, Hasan Ali dropped a simple chance to get rid of dangerous Wade. Wade hit 3 successive sixes and helped Australia chase down the target with 1 over to spare. Wade and Stoinis added unbeaten 81 runs for the 6th wicket.

Australia 177 for 5 in 19 overs (Warner 49, Wade 41*, Stoinis 40, Shahdab Khan 4/26) beat Pakistan 176 for 4 in 20 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 67, Fakhar Zaman 55*, Starc 2/38) by 5 wickets.

For his unbeaten 41 off 17 balls, Matthew Wade was named the man of the match award. Australia and New Zealand will take on each other in the finals to be played on 14th November.

 Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday. Netherlands captain Peter Seelar won the toss and decided to bat first.  The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday. It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli.
