India versus New Zealand 1st T20I: Surya Kumar and Rohit Sharma knocks help India register win

 Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team clinched a thrilling 5 wicket win in the first T20I played at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on Wednesday.

Indian newly appointed T20I captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Bhuvneshwar Kumar rattled Darly Mitchell stumps without opening his account. Martin Guptill and Mark Chapman put the pressure back on the Indian inexperienced bowlers taking them for runs. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Guptill and Chapman made batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both batters kept New Zealand on course for big total hitting boundaries at will. Chapman completed his fifty off 45 balls while Guptill reached half-century off 31 deliveries. The Indian bowlers looked out of sorts before the experienced R Ashwin dismissed well Chapman. Chapman and Guptill added 109 runs for the 2nd wicket. Ashwin struck one more time getting rid of Glenn Phillips to put brakes on New Zealand batting.

Deepak Chahar dismissed well-set Martin Guptill trying to increase the scoring rate. Guptill and Seifert added 30 runs for the 4th wicket. The Indian bowlers did not allow Kiwis batters to score runs easily restricting New Zealand to 165 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 165 runs to win, it was an aggressive start by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul took on New Zealand's best bowler Trent Boult hitting him for 21 runs. Mitchell Santer got rid of Rahul with a bad delivery caught at the boundary by Chapman. The Indian openers added 50 runs laying a strong foundation. Surya Kumar Yadav started his innings with a boundary keeping the momentum going on for India. At the end of the first six overs, India scored 56 for 1.

After the field restrictions, New Zealand called for a review with LBW shout, but the decision was upheld as it was pitching outside leg. Surya Kumar and Rohit looked in complete control hitting bad balls away for boundaries and taking singles with ease. After being smashed for runs, Boult struck for New Zealand dismissing Rohit Sharma caught by Ravindra. Rohit and Surya Kumar added 59 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Surya Kumar Yadav looked in superb touch and completed his fifty off 34 balls. Surya Kumar was bowled by Boult trying to hit a sweep shot. Surya Kumar and Pant added 35 runs for the 3rd wicket. Pant and Iyer struggled for timing as Ferguson bowled a superb 18th over. Southee dismissed Iyer caught by Boult.

With 10 runs required off the last over, Mitchell was trusted with the bowl but gave 2 wide deliveries. The debutant Venetaksh Iyer tried to reverse sweep caught by Ravindra at short third man. Pant hit the winning runs with a boundary helping India win the opening encounter.

India 166 for 5 in 19.4 overs (Surya Kumar Yadav 62, Rohit Sharma 48, Boult 2/31, Santer 1/19) beat New Zealand 164 for 6 in 20 overs (Guptill 70, Chapman 63, Ashwin 2/23, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/24) by 5 wickets.

For his 62 off 40 balls, Surya Kumar Yadav was named the man of the match award. India takes 1-0 lead in the 3 matches T20I series. The second T20I match will be played on 19th November at Ranchi.
