India versus New Zealand 1st Test 1st Day: Shreyas Iyer and Jadeja puts India in a dominating position
The Indian Cricket Team had a great first day of the first Test with great performances by debutant Shreyas Iyer, Gill and Jadeja played at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur on Thursday.
Indian stand-in captain Ajiyanka Rahane won the toss and
decided to bat first. Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill looked tentative against
Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson. Shubman Gill was given out by the umpire and on
review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the inside edge. The New Zealand
captain Kane Williamson did not take the review for LBW. Kyle Jamieson's patience
paid off as he dismissed Mayank Agarwal with good delivery.
Shubman Gill took the advantage of chances as he took on Ajaz
Patel and Will Somerville. On other hand, Pujara played according to the merit of
the ball making life tough for Kiwi’s bowlers. Gill looked solid completing his
fifty off 81 balls to put India in a comfortable position to end the first
session at 82 for 1.
Soon after the lunch break, Jamieson produced a cracking
delivery to dismiss Shubman Gill. Gill and Pujara added 61 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Kiwi bowlers did not allow Indian batters to score runs easily. Southee
got rid of Pujara taking edge to Tom Blundell. The debutant Shreyas Iyer looked
edgy at the start against Ajaz Patel trying to hit big shots. Ajiyanka Rahane
looked in decent touch hitting bad balls away for boundaries. New Zealand was
dealt with a major blow as Tim Southee went off the field due to an injury.
After being given a reprieve by review, Rahane was dismissed
the very next ball taking inside edge onto the stumps off Jamieson bowling to
leave India in some trouble at 145 for 4. Iyer and Rahane added 39 runs for the
4th wicket. Shreyas Iyer took on Patel and put New Zealand bowlers
under pressure. At the end of the second session, India made 154 for 4.
New Zealand captain Williamson decided to bring the spinners
onto attack as Iyer put pressure on the opposition to complete fifty off 94
balls. Jadeja played according to the situation hitting bad balls for
boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Ajaz Patel bowled negative lines
and lengths, but Iyer put pressure on him with big shots. It was a superb
batting display by debutant Iyer and experienced Jadeja.
Kane Williamson took the 2nd new ball immediately.
Jadeja showed his intent and reached his fifty off 99 balls. Iyer smashed a six
off Somerville in the final over to help India post 258 for 4. Jadeja and Iyer
