India versus New Zealand 1st Test 2nd Day: Tim Southee, openers lead New Zealand fightback
New Zealand stormed back into the match with some brilliant performances against hosts India on the 2nd day played at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur on Friday.
Starting on the overnight score of 258 for 4, Ravindra
Jadeja survived a close LBW shout given not out by the umpire and on review, it was
retained due to the umpire's call. Soon after, Southee shattered Jadeja stumps
taking inside edge onto the stumps giving New Zealand the breakthrough. Iyer
and Jadeja added 121 runs for the 5th wicket. Shreyas Iyer looked in
great touch putting bad balls away for boundaries off Kyle Jamieson. Wriddhiman
Saha also went cheaply with a good catch by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. Southee kept
on bowling nagging lines and lengths not allowing Indian batters to score runs
easily.
Shreyas Iyer completed his maiden Test century off 157 balls
and became the 16th Indian batter to score a century on debut in Test
matches. Southee then grabbed the wicket of well-set caught at covers and then
produced a beauty to dismiss Axar Patel leaving India in some trouble. Blundell
missed a stumped chance off Ashwin. Ashwin took most of the strike and gave 1
or 2 deliveries to Umesh Yadav. India ended the first session at 339 for 8.
After the lunch break, Ajaz Patel got the wicket of Ravichandran
Ashwin and then Ishant Sharma to dismiss India for 345. It was a superb bowling
effort by Southee who bowled 11 overs in a spell.
In reply, Tom Latham was given out by the umpire and on
review, it was overturned to not out hitting the inside edge. Latham and Will
Young looked confident against the Indian bowlers. Latham was given out again
but on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit inside edge again. Latham
and Will Young played the Indian spinners well. It was a gritty batting display
by New Zealand openers as they ended 2nd session at 72 for 0.
After the tea break, Young completed his fifty off 88 balls
and kept the Indian bowlers at bay. This time Indian captain Rahane decided to
review the decision, but the decision was retained due to the bowl missing the leg
stump. Jadeja bowled great lines and lengths but did not yield any results.
Before the close of play, Latham was given out caught but on
review, it was overturned to not out it did not hit bat. New Zealand openers thwarted
away the threat of the Indian spin trio ending the 2nd day at 129 for 0.
New Zealand 129 for 0 in 57 overs ( Will Young 75*, Latham
50*) trail 345 in 111.1 overs ( Shreyas Iyer 105, Jadeja 50, Tim Southee 5/69,
Kyle Jamieson 3/69) by 216 runs.
