India versus New Zealand 1st Test 5th Day: Match ends in a thrilling draw

 The first Test match between India and New Zealand ends in a thrilling draw on the fifth and final day played at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur on Monday.

Starting on the overnight score of 4 for 1, it was an ideal start by nightwatchman Will Somerville and Tom Latham as both Kiwi batters kept the Indian bowlers especially Ashwin and Umesh Yadav. Ishant Sharma got injured while fielding. Somerville looked confident against the Indian spinners while Latham also frustrated the Indian bowling. It was a brilliant batting effort by Somerville and Latham looking confident hitting bad balls away for boundaries. At the end of the first session, New Zealand made 79 for 1.

Umesh Yadav got rid of Will Somerville caught brilliantly by Shubman Gill at fine leg off the very first delivery. Somerville and Latham added 76 runs for 2nd wicket. The New Zealand captain Kane Williamson captain looked solid with his defensive technique while Latham kept his calm and reached a half-century off 138 balls. R Ashwin struck for India getting rid of Latham taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Latham and Williamson added 39 runs for the 3rd wicket.  The Indian bowlers kept the pressure on the experienced duo of Williamson and Taylor. At the stroke of tea break, Jadeja dismissed Ross Taylor to leave New Zealand in trouble at 125 for 4.

It was a perfect start for India in the final session as Axar Patel got rid of Henry Nicholls's plumb LBW to leave visitors struggling. Ravindra Jadeja produced a major scalp getting the wicket of Kiwi captain Williamson that kept low making the life of visitors struggle. Tom Blundell and Rachin Ravindra looked solid with their technique. R Ashwin dismissed Blundell hitting the bat onto stumps to leave New Zealand on verge of defeat.

Ravindra was given out by the umpire and the decision was overturned to not out pitching outside off. Rahane decided to take 2nd new ball in 85th over. Pujara dropped a tough chance to dismiss Kyle Jamieson. Jadeja got wickets of Jamieson and then Southee to put India on course for a win.

Ajaz Patel and Ravindra defended against the Indian spinners. It was a brilliant effort by the debutant Ravindra who faced 91 deliveries while Patel faced 23 balls. Both denied India a win and helped New Zealand register a famous draw.

With this draw, India and New Zealand earned 6 points each in the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

345 in 111.1 overs (Shreyas Iyer 105, Jadeja 50, Tim Southee 5/69, Kyle Jamieson 3/69) and 234 for 7 in 81 overs ( Shreyas Iyer 65, Saha 61*, Kyle Jamieson 3/40, Southee 3/75 ) New Zealand 296 in 142.3 overs ( Tom Latham 95, Will Young 89, Axar Patel 5/62) and 165 for 9 in 98 overs ( Latham 52, Will Somerville 36, Jadeja 4/40, Ashwin 3/35)  

For his 170 runs, Shreyas Iyer was named the man of the match. The second Test will begin on 3rd November at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
