Indonesia Masters 2021: Good day for Indian shuttlers

 The Indian shuttlers had a good day with 3 out of 4 making it into the second round of prestigious Super 750 Indonesian Masters played at Bali, Indonesia played on Tuesday.

Lakshya Sen produced a stunning performance to stun Kenta Tsynuema of Japan in three thrilling games. It was an impressive start by the young Indian who reached the semi-finals of the Hylo Open. Sen had a disappointing beginning trailing by 6-9 before making a strong comeback. From 14-13, the Indian took 4 points in succession to put the Japanese under pressure winning the first game at 21-17.

The Indian started the 2nd game on an aggressive note-taking a 4-0 lead before the Japanese made a strong comeback to edge the game ahead at 10-8. Sen fought back strongly taking a slender 11-10 lead at the interval. After the break, Kenta showed his intent taking points in succession to level the scores at 14-14. The Japanese played attacking badminton to win the second set at 21-18 forcing the match into the decider.

In the deciding game, the Indian did not start well trailing by 3-6, and then took six points in succession to take a 13-8 lead. The World number 10, Kenta showed great character to level the scores at 16-16 but Lakshya Sen ensured that he took five of the next six points winning the final game by 21-17 to move into the second round. He will face World number Kento Momota. 

PV Sindhu had no problems in defeating Katheong of Thailand in two straight games. It was a great start by the Indian who kept the pressure on the young Thai player taking an 11-5 lead at the interval. After the interval, Katheong tried to put pressure on Sindhu, but the Indian showed his aggressive intent to win the first game easily at 21-15.

The second game was a much closer effort by the Thailand player. Despite having a great beginning by Sindhu, Katheong kept the Indian under pressure leveling the scores at 8-8. Sindhu showed great courage winning taking an 11-8 lead at interval. After the break, the Thai player fought kept the Indian on her toes. With score reading level at 19-19, Katheong saved one match point before Sindhu won it by 21-19 to move into the second round. She will take on C Azurmendi of Spain.

 Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy defeated A Boje and M Poulsen of Denmark in three thrilling games. The Danish pair showed great intent right from the word go winning the first game easily at 21-9.

In the second game, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy fought back strongly to win it easily by 21-11 forcing the match into the decider.

Both pairs fought for each point in the deciding game. The Danish pair took a slender 11-10 lead at the interval. After the break, the fight continued before Ashwini Ponnappa and Reddy held their nerves to win it by 21-18 to move into the second round. They will face Thailand pair of Kitthiakarul and Prajongai.

It was a disappointing end for the men’s doubles pair of RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty as they lost to Ong YS and Teo E Y of Malaysia in two straight games at 17-21, 15-21 to be knocked out of the tournament.
