Indonesia Masters 2021: Mixed day for Indian shuttlers
It was a mixed day for the Indian contingent as 3 qualified for the second round of Super 750 Indonesia Masters played at Bali, Indonesia on Wednesday.
Kidambi Srikanth defeated pre-qualifier Christo Popov in
three thrilling games. It was a close-fought first game as both players fought
for each point. The Indian held his nerves to win the first game easily at
21-18. Popov made a strong comeback in the 2nd set as Srikanth
committed unforced errors. The qualifier took the advantage winning it easily
at 21-15 to force the match into the decider.
The third set began off well with Kidambi Srikanth taking an
early lead before Popov showed some character to put the Indian on the
backfoot. At the mid-game interval, Srikanth led 11-8. Despite Popov showing a fight, Srikanth held his nerves to win the game at 21-16. He will face the tough
challenge of Jonathan Christie of Indonesia.
HS Prannoy finally crossed the first-round hurdle defeating
Darren Liew of Malaysia in two thrilling games. Both players fought for each point,
but the Indian dominated the play with match points. Liew never let his spirits
down to take lead. Prannoy then held his nerves to win the first game at 22-20.
The second set also went the same way as in the first set.
Both players fought for each point as Liew had a slender 11-10 lead at interval.
After the break, the match ebbed and flow before Prannoy won points in
succession to win the second game at 21-19 to move into the second round. He
will face Victor Axelsen of Denmark.
It was another disappointing outing as Parupalli Kashyap was
knocked out in the first round as he lost to Hans Kan Vittinghus of Denmark in
two straight games. After being completely outplayed in the first game by
10-21, Kashyap showed great spirit before fighting out 19-21.
Sai Praneeth's poor form continued losing to Hiren Rhuvsatvito
of Indonesia in three games. It was a brilliant start by the Indian putting the
opponent under pressure winning the first game easily at 21-16. The Indonesian
made a strong comeback to win the second set by 21-14 to force the match into
the decider.
It was a very close fought affair between these players as
both fought for each point before the Indonesian held his nerves to win the
decider at 22-20 to knock Indian out early again.
The unseeded pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Sikki Reddy stunned
the number 2 seeded Indonesian pair of Praveen Jordan and Oktavanti in two
straight games. Kapila and Reddy dominated the first game-winning it easily by
21-11. It was a much closer affair in the 2nd game as both pairs
fought for each point before the Indian pair held their nerves to win it by
22-20 to move into the second round. They will take on S Jomokh and Paesamparan
of Thailand.
Young Indian pairing of Kapila and MR Arjun lost to T Hoki
and Kobayashi of Japan in two straight games. Despite a great start in the first
game, Kapila and Arjun did were not able to maintain the consistency losing it by
17-21, 12-21 to be knocked out.
