Indonesia Masters 2021: Three Indian shuttlers qualify for the quarterfinals

 It was a brilliant day for the Indian shuttlers as 3 of them made it into the quarterfinals stage played at Bali, Indonesia on Thursday.

PV Sindhu cruised to a comfortable win over Clara Azurmendi of Spain in three games. The young Spaniard fought well against the two-time Olympic medallists. At the mid-game interval, the Indian had a good lead. After the break, Clara fought back strongly to level scores at 14-14 and then took points in succession to win the first set at 21-17.

Sindhu then fought back strongly in the next two games putting an attacking display and did allow her opponent to comeback into the match. The Indian won the second set easily at 21-7, followed by another brilliant display to win a decider by 21-12 to move into the quarterfinals. She will face ranked number 30 Yigit of Turkey.

Kidambi Srikanth showed great fighting courage to defeat a tough Indonesian opponent Jonathan Christie in a thrilling three games. The first game saw the Christie dominate Srikanth and created enough pressure with smashes to win it by 21-13.

The second game was a close-fought affair as both players fought for each point. Christie looked in control and put Srikanth on the backfoot. Despite committing unforced errors, the Indian displayed great attacking skills to win it by 21-18 to force the match into a decider.

Both players started the final game on an even keel taking alternate points. At the mid-game interval, the Indonesian had a slender lead. After the break, Srikanth fought back strongly to take points in succession and did not allow his opponent to make a comeback winning it by 21-15 moving into the quarterfinals.

HS Prannoy produced one of the major upsets defeating Olympic Axselen of Denmark in three games. It was a disappointing start for Prannoy who looked out of sorts as Axselen took the advantage winning it 21-14.

The second game was a much-better affair for Prannoy putting the pressure on Axselen. At the mid-game interval, Axelsen had an 11-7 lead. The Indian showed great spirit after being 8-14 down took points in succession and put Axselen under pressure. Prannoy equaled the score at 19-19 and won the second game at 21-19.

Both players started the decider taking alternate points. Prannoy committed unforced errors but fought back strongly. Axelsen had a good lead at the mid-game interval. After the break, Prannoy showed fighting spirit leveling score and then did not allow Olympic Champion a chance into the game-winning it by 21-16 to move into the quarterfinals. HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth will face each other.

Lakshya Sen went down fighting against World number 1 Kento Momota of Japan in two straight games. The first game was a dominating display by Momota winning the first game easily at 21-10. It was a close-fought second set as the Indian kept the Japanese on the backfoot. Despite having the lead, Sen could not make up losing it by 19-21 to be knocked out.

The unseeded pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Sikki Reddy went down fighting to Jomokh and Paewsamparan of Thailand in three games. Thailand's pair won the first game easily by 21-15. Dhruv and Reddy held their nerves to win the second game by 23-21.

The third game was a closely fought affair, but the Thailand pair held their nerves to win it by 21-18 to knock the Indian pair out.
