Indonesia Open 2021: Good Day for Indian shuttlers
It was another good day for the Indian shuttlers as 3 out of 4 qualified for the quarterfinals stage of Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2021 played at Bali on Thursday.
PV Sindhu had no problems defeating Germany Y Li in two
straight games. It was a dominating display by the Indian who showed aggressive
play right from word go and made life tough for the opponent. Sindhu won the
first game easily at 21-12. The second game was a much closer fight but the
Indian closed the game out by 21-18 to move into the quarterfinals. She will face
Sim Y J of South Korea.
Sai Praneeth survived a scare beating Pre qualifier Christo
Popov of France in three games. The Indian started the first game on a positive
note putting pressure on the qualifier with an 11-7 lead at the interval. Popov made
a strong comeback into the match taking points in succession to level scores and
then take lead. Praneeth experience came to the fore as he held his nerves winning the first game at 21-17.
The second game saw both players taking alternate points. It
was a great performance by Popov after the break to take points in succession
and win it by 21-14 to force the match into the decider.
Praneeth began the final game on a positive note before
Popov put Indian under pressure. The Indian held his nerves after trailing for
quite some time winning it by 21-19 to move into the quarterfinals. He will face
Victor Axselen of Denmark.
Kidambi Srikanth had a disappointing outing losing to
Olympic Champion Victor Axselen in two straight games. The Indian committed
unforced errors at the start as Axselen took advantage of it taking a decent
lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian tried his best but lost the
first game by 14-21.
The second game was a much closer effort as Srikanth played
with aggression but committed unforced errors to lose it by 18-21 to be knocked
out of the tournament.
Men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag
Shetty defeated Korean pair of Kang M-h and Seo S J in three games. The Indian
pair started the first game on an aggressive note putting the Korean pair under
pressure winning it by 21-15.
The second game saw the match ebbed and flow right from the
word go. Despite being in the lead, the Indian pair was not able to take chances
losing it by 19-21.
It was an amazing third game as both pairs fought for each
point. The Indian pair kept Kang and Seo under pressure despite trailing. Satwik
and Chirag held their nerves to win the decider by 23-21 moving into the
quarterfinals. They will face Goh S F and Izzudin of Malaysia.
