Indonesia Open 2021: PV Sindhu, doubles pair qualify for semi-finals, Praneeth crash out
It was a good day for the Indian shuttlers as PV Sindhu and men’s doubles made it into the semi-finals against their respective opponents of Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2021 played at Bali, Indonesia on Friday.
The two-time Olympic medallist registered a hard-fought win
over Sim Yingung of South Korea in three games. Sindhu struggled in the first
game committing unforced errors losing it by 14-21. The second game was a
closely fought affair as the Indian dominated the initial stages before Sim
made a strong comeback later, but Sindhu held his nerves to register a 21-19 win
in 2nd game.
It was a dominating performance by Sindhu in the decider
putting the opposition under pressure and winning by 21-14 to move into the semi-finals. She will face Ratchnok Inatnon of Thailand.
Sai Praneeth looked out of color and lost in straight games
to Victor Axselen. The Indian started well initially before Axselen made life
tough for the Indian with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Axselen
had a decent lead. After the interval, Olympic Champion dominated the play and won the first game easily at 21-12. In the second game, Axelsen dominated the opposition
winning it by 21-8 to move into the semi-finals.
The men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and
Chirag Shetty defeated Goh SF and Izzudin of Malaysia in two thrilling games. Both
pairs fought for each point in two games as the Indian held their nerves to win
the match by 21-19, 21-19. Despite the Malaysian pair storming back to reduce the gap, Satwik and Chirag played some lovely smashes to put the opposition under
pressure. They will face the number 1 seed Marcus Gideon and Sanajya of Indonesia.
Indian badminton fans would be hoping that both shuttlers
can play well against the tough opponents and qualify for the finals.
