Indonesia Open 2021: Three Indian shuttlers qualify for second round
It was a good day for the Indian shuttlers as three of them made it into the second round of the Super 1000 Indonesia Open played at Bali on Wednesday.
PV Sindhu registered a hard-fought win over Aya Ohori of
Japan in three games. It was a brilliant start by the Japanese to put the
Indian under pressure with smashes. The Indian showed glimpses of her attacking
play, but Ohori took an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, Sindhu made
a strong comeback to take points in succession and level scores at 15-15. Ohori
kept the Indian under pressure winning the first game with a scoreline of 21-17.
The second game saw Ohori taking an early 4-0 lead. After
the initial setback, Indian showed great intent putting the Japanese under
immense pressure taking a decent lead at the interval. Despite Ohori's fightback,
Sindhu held her nerves to win the second game with 21-17.
The Japanese started the decider on a positive note taking the initial
lead. Sindhu forced back into the match to level scores at 5-5. At the mid-game
interval, Sindhu led 11-6. After the break, Sindhu looked in cruise control
with a 15-10 lead, but Ohori took 5 points in succession to level scores at 15-15.
Despite Ohori giving fight, the Indian closed out the game with a scoreline of 21-17
moving into the second round. She will now face Y Li of Germany.
In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy
lost to Gabriel and Stefani Stevoa of Bulgaria in two straight games. It was a
very close fought game as both pairs fought for each point. At the mid-game
interval, the Bulgarian pair took a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, the match
ebbed and flow from one side to another before Stevoa took the first game at
29-27.
The second game saw the Bulgarian pair dominate Ponnappa and
Reddy with a 7-1 lead initially. The Indian pair fought back to reduce the gap but
the opponent took lead at the interval. After the break, Ponnappa and Reddy
gave their best as the opposition won it by 21-18 to knock the Indian pair out.
Kidambi Srikanth defeated Indian counterpart HS Prannoy in a
thrilling three games. The first game saw Srikanth dominate his opponent
winning it by 21-15. It was a close-fought second game as HS Prannoy made a
strong comeback to take a slender 11-10 lead at the interval. After the break,
both players fought for each point before Prannoy held his nerves to win it by
21-19.
In the final and deciding game, Srikanth dominated Prannoy winning
by 21-12 to move into the second round. He will face Victor Axselen of Denmark.
Sai Praneeth survived a scare before winning his first-round
match against TJ Popov of France. The Indian looked in decent touch, but the French
player fought strongly. Praneeth held his nerves to win the first game easily at
21-19. In the second game also Popov play well but the Indian showed fight and
courage to win it by 21-18. He will face C Popov of France in the second round.
