Syed Mushtaq Ali 2021/22 Finals: Shahrukh Khan heroics helps Tamil Nadu retain the title
The powerhouse of Indian domestic cricket fought in another thrilling final as Tamil Nadu registered a thrilling win over Karnataka played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu captain Vijay Shankar won the toss and decided to
field first. Sandeep Warrier was smacked for 2 boundaries in very first over by
Manish Pandey, Sai Kishore produced a peach to get rid of inform Rohan Kadam.
Karun Nair looked in great touch putting TN bowlers under some pressure with
boundaries. Sanjay Yadav dismissed the dangerous Nair who played cross the line
and was bowled. Kishore struck for the second getting the wicket of Manish Pandey with
another superb delivery. At the end of the first six overs, Karnataka made 34
for 3.
After the field restrictions, Abhinav Manohar and BS Sharath
showed intent by hitting boundaries and taking singles. Manohar continued his
impressive form in the tournament taking on M Ashwin and other TN bowlers. A
superb catch by Sudharsan got rid of BS Sharath to end 55 runs partnership for
the 4th wicket. Tamil Nadu fielding was superb as they saved a lot of
boundaries and kept Karnataka under pressure.
Manohar was caught by Mohammed at long-off trying to hit a
big shot leaving Karnataka in some trouble. Jagadeesha Suchith joined in with
Pravin Dubey and hit some vital runs. T Natarajan coming back after an injury did
not look comfortable giving away wides and boundaries. Dubey smacked 16 runs off
Warrier in the 19th over. Thanks to the quickfire 41 runs partnership by
Dubey and Suchith, Karnataka posted 151 for 7.
Tamil Nadu openers Hari Nishanth looked in fine touch
putting Karnataka bowlers especially KC Cariappa under pressure with
boundaries. A superb piece of throw by Patil and gather by BS Sharath resulted
in a run-out of dangerous Nishanth. Jagadeesan played some lovely shots as Tamil
Nadu ended the first six overs at 40 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Karun Nair was bought into the
attack and got rid of Sudarshan. The Karnataka spinners did not allow Vijay
Shankar and Jagadeesan to hit boundaries with disciplined bowling. Jagadeesan eventually
released the pressure for TN, but the pressure was high. KC Cariappa got two
wickets in the same over getting wickets of Vijay Shankar and Jagadeesan caught at
long-off. Vijay Shankar and Jagadeesan added 44 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Sharukh Khan and Sanjay Yadav changed the momentum of the game
taking on Darshan hitting him for 19 runs in the 17th over. Jain was
superb giving away just 6 runs and grabbing the wicket of Sanjay Yadav to put
TN under pressure.
Despite going for 14 runs, Patil got the wicket of Mohammed.
With 16 runs required off the last over, Sai Kishore smacked a boundary to
release some pressure. Shahrukh produced a magical shot on the final delivery helping
Tamil Nadu register a thrilling 4 wicket win.
Tamil Nadu 153 for 6 in 20 overs ( Narayan Jagadeesan 41, Sharukh
Khan 33*, KC Cariappa 2/23) beat Karnataka 151 for 6 in 20 overs ( Abhinav Manohar
46, Praveen Dubey 33, Sai Kishore 3/12) by 4 wickets.
For his unbeaten 33 off 15 balls, Shahrukh Khan was awarded the man of the match. With this win, Tamil Nadu retained the title that they won in the 2020/21 season.
