Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021: Karnataka to face Tamil Nadu

 The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 saw Tamil Nadu and Karnataka winning their matches on the semi-final’s day played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu versus Hyderabad

Tamil Nadu captain Vijay Shankar won the toss and decided to field first. It was a superb start by the defending Champions as Saravana Kumar grabbed the wicket of Hyderabad captain Tanmay Agarwal caught by Sandeep Warrier. Tilak Verma and Pragnay Reddy put some pressure on Tamil Nadu bowlers before Kumar broke the backbone of Hyderabad batting line-up getting wickets of Tilak Verma, Pragnay Reddy, and then Himlay Agarwal caught by Sharukh Khan at slips to leave Hyderabad in big trouble. At the end of the first six overs, Hyderabad scored 30 for 4.

After the field restrictions, Hyderabad kept on losing wickets due to inexperienced batting playing rash strokes. Tanay Thyagarajan hit some valuable runs but was caught by Sai Kishore. Saravana Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with 5 for 21 to bowl out Hyderabad for just 90 runs.

In reply to 91 runs, Tamil Nadu did not have a great start losing wickets in quick succession of Narayan Jagadeesan and Hari Nishanth. TN captain Vijay Shankar and Sai Sudharsan looked confident with their strokes respecting the good balls while smacking boundaries off bad deliveries. At the end of the first six overs, Tamil Nadu scored 25 for 2.

After the field restrictions, Shankar and Sai did not have problems keeping the momentum going on for Tamil Nadu. Both batters put on unbeaten 76 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tamil Nadu won the match by 8 wickets with 34 balls to spare.

Tamil Nadu 92 for 2 in 14.2 overs (Vijay Shankar 43*, Sudarshan 34*, Rakshann Reddy 2/23) beat Hyderabad 90 in 18.3 overs ( Tanay Thyagarajan 25, Saravana Kumar 5/21) by 8 wickets.

 

Karnataka versus Vidarbha

The experienced Karnataka side defeated Vidarbha in the 2nd semi-finals played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar won the toss and decided to field first.

It could have been an ideal start as Akshay Wadkar dropped a sitter to get rid of Rohan Kadam. After the initial drop chance, Kadam put the pressure on Vidarbha bowlers hitting boundaries at will while Manish Pandey opened innings struggled initially with his timing. At the end of the first six overs, Karnataka 53 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Vidarbha bowlers kept a tight leash on Kadam and Pandey. After the initial struggle, Karnataka openers upped the ante hitting boundaries with ease. Kadam reached his fifty off 36 balls and then put the Vidarbha bowlers with big shots. Lalit Yadav finally got the wicket of well-set Kadam caught at deep square leg by Wankhede. Karnataka openers added 132 runs laying a strong foundation for a massive total.

Abhinav Manohar showed intent right from the word go hitting big shots. Manish Pandey completed his fifty off 40 balls and was eventually caught by Wakhare at the boundary. It was a brilliant bowling effort by Vidarbha to keep Karnataka batters at bay. Darshan Nalakande took wickets of Aniruddha Joshi, BS Sharath, dangerous Jagadeesha Suchith in three successive deliveries. Manohar did not get strike and was dismissed too. Darshan gave away just 1 run and took 4 wickets to restrict Karnataka for 176 for 7 in 20 overs.

In reply to 177 runs to win, It was an aggressive start by Atharva Taide and experienced Ganesh Satish hitting boundaries with ease. Cariappa got the breakthrough for Karnataka getting the wicket of Taide caught by Pandey as Vidarbha openers put on 43 runs in quick time. At the end of the first six overs, Vidarbha scored 56 for 1.

A good catch by Patil at the boundary ended the innings for Satish. After that, Patil dropped two simple chances to get rid of Wadkar and Dubey. Karun Nair dismissed Vidarbha captain Wadkar bowled. Wadkar and Dubey added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Cariappa got the wicket of Shivam Dubey brilliantly caught by BS Sharath to leave Vidarbha in some trouble. Soon after, Darshan took the wicket of Jitesh Sharma as Karun Nair took catch at short third man. Aproov Wankhede and Akshay Karnewar kept Vidarbha in the hunt with some lusty blows.

With 14 runs required off the final over, Manohar took a lovely catch to end the innings for Karnewar. Karnewar and Wankhede added 41 runs for the 6th wicket. Wankhede boundary off the final ball but Karnataka registered a thrilling 4 runs win.

Karnataka 176 for 7 in 20 overs (Rohan Kadam 87, Manish Pandey 54, Darshan Nalakande 4/28) beat Vidarbha 172 for 6 in 20 overs ( Taide 32, Satish 31, Cariappa 2/27) by 4 runs.
