Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021/22: Quarterfinals stage

 It was another great day of action in the quarterfinals of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as defending champions Tamil Nadu, Karnataka proved their worthwhile Vidarbha, and Hyderabad produced some stunning performances to defeat fancied opponents.

Quarterfinals 1

Tamil Nadu versus Kerala

Tamil Nadu captain Vijay Shankar won the toss and decided to field first played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Thursday. TN bowlers kept it tight and did not allow Kerala openers Azhardudeen and Kunnumal to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Kerala scored 42 for 0.

After the field restrictions, a superb catch by Sandeep Warrier long-on ended the innings for Azharudeen. Kerala openers added 45 runs laying a strong foundation. Murgun Ashwin and Sai Kishore maintained the pressure on Sachin Baby and Kunnumal not allowing them to score runs easily. Kunnumal looked in decent touch reaching fifty off 39 balls. Kunnumal fell stumped by Jagadeesan. Kunnumal and Baby added 46 runs for the 2nd wicket. Sanjay Yadav struck in the same over getting rid of Sanju Samson with a lovely catch by M Ashwin.

Vishnu Vinod came to the crease and took a few balls to settle before taking on Sandeep Warrier. Warrier went off the field due to an injury after taking the catch at long-on. Vinod just looked in sensational touch timing the ball brilliantly hitting Saravan for sixes. Baby was eventually caught at the boundary. Vinod completed his fifty off just 22 balls keeping momentum for Kerala. Baby and Vinod added 58 runs for the 4th wicket. Vinod hammered in the last over to helping Kerala post 181 for 4 in 20 overs. Kerala smashed 62 runs off just 18 balls.

Chasing 182 runs to win, Hari Nishanth and Narayan Jagadeesan provided a sensational start hitting boundaries at will. KM Asif struck for Kerala getting rid of Jagadeesan caught by Samson. Hari Nishanth looked in great touch keeping the momentum going for Tamil Nadu. At the end of the first six overs, Tamil Nadu made 58 for 1.

Manukrishnan struck soon after the field restrictions getting rid of Hari Nishanth. Sai Sudaharsan and TN captain Vijay Shankar put bad deliveries away for boundaries keeping the chase on target. Midhun got the wicket of Sudharsan ending 57 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. Despite losing key wickets, Shahrukh Khan and Sanjay Yadav put Vishweshar under immense pressure. Manukrishnan got the wicket of Yadav. Yadav and Khan added 33 runs for the 5th wicket. M Mohammed hit the winning runs helping Tamil Nadu chase down the target with 3 balls to spare.

Tamil Nadu 187 for 5 in 19.3 overs (Sai Sudharsan 46, Vijay Shankar 33, Manukrishnan 3/26) beat Kerala 181 for 4 in 20 overs ( Vishnu Vinod 65*, Kunnumal 51, Sanjay Yadav 2/23)

Quarterfinals 2

Karnataka defeated Bengal in a thrilling 2nd quarterfinals played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Bengal captain Sudip Chatterjee won the toss and decided to field first. It was a cautious start by BS Sharath and Rohan Kadam. Sharath was bowled by Akashdeep. Bengal bowlers did not allow Karnataka batters to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Karnataka scored 28 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Manish Pandey struggled to time the ball while Kadam looked in decent touch. Shahbaz Ahmed got rid of Kadam caught by Pramnik. Kadam and Pandey added 32 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Karun Nair showed intent right from the word go while Manish Pandey struggled with his strokes. Sayan Ghosh got the wicket of Manish Pandey caught by Pramnik at backward point. Pandey and Nair added 36 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Abhinav Manohar was in a severe mood hitting Writtick Chatterjee for 3 fours and 1 six before being caught at the boundary. Manohar and Nair added 30 runs for the 4th wicket. Aniruddha Joshi also hit some vital blows along with Karun Nair. Karun Nair was in a sensational mood hitting six off the last ball to complete his fifty. Thanks to his superb knock, Karnataka posted 160 for 5.

In reply to 161 runs to win, Goswami started the innings off to a flying start hitting 20 runs in the first over. Karnataka struck as Patil dismissed Abishek Das. A superb piece of throw by the wicketkeeper and gather by Cariappa ended in running out of Goswami.

Sudip Chatterjee fell in an attempt to hit another big shot. At the end of the first six overs, Bengal made 52 for 3. After the field restrictions, Writtick Chatterjee kept the pressure on Karnataka bowlers while Kaif Ahmed struggled with his timing. Suchith got wickets of Kaif Ahmed and Chatterjee in quick succession to leave Bengal in trouble. Kaif and Chatterjee added 49 runs for the 4th wicket. Chatterjee completed his fifty off 37 balls and eventually being dismissed to leave Bengal in massive trouble.

RR Roy Chaudhary looked in great touch hitting the bad balls away for boundaries. Darshan bowled a superb 19th over getting the wicket of Praminck. Chaudhary and Pramnick added 33 runs for the 7th wicket.

With 20 runs required off the last over, Chaudhary smacked 2 sixes off the first two balls by Patil. Akash deep hit a boundary to make equation 1 from 1. Manish Pandey produced a superb direct throw to run out Akash deep forcing the match into Super Over.

In the Super Over, Cariappa bowled a great over dismissing Kaif Ahmed. Goswami was run out for the second time as Bengal could only score 5 runs. Manish Pandey smacked a six to help Karnataka win the match.

Karnataka 160 for 5 in 20 overs ( Karun Nair 55*, Rohan Kadam 30, Akash deep 1/23) and 8 for 0 in 0.2 ( Manish Pandey 8*) beat Bengal 160 for 8 in 20 overs ( Writtick Chatterjee 51, RR Chaudhary 36*, MB Darshan 3/26, Suchith 2/24) and 5 for 2 in 0.4 overs ( Goswami 4, Cariappa 1/5) in Super Over.

 

 

Quarterfinals 3

Vidarbha versus Rajasthan

Vidarbha produced another superb performance to defeat Rajasthan played at Palam A Ground, New Delhi. Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar won the toss and decided to field first. Vidarbha bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals reducing Rajasthan in massive trouble at 15 for 5.

Arjit Gupta was run out by Ganesh Satish. It was a superb bowling effort by Vidarbha to restrict Rajasthan for modes total of 84 for 8. Kamlesh Nagarkoti was the top scorer for Rajasthan with 39 not out.

In reply to 85 runs to win, the experienced campaigner Ganesh Satish and Atharva Taide looked in control making life tough for Rajasthan bowlers. Ganesh Satish was dismissed by Aniket Chaudhary. Rajasthan openers added 63 runs. Taide and Wadkar helped Vidarbha chase down this target easily with 30 balls to spare.

Vidarbha 87 for 1 in 14.5 overs ( Taide 40*, Satish 28, Aniket Chaudhary 1/8) beat Rajasthan 84 for 8 in 20 overs ( Kamlesh Nagarkoti 39*, Yash Thakur 2/24) by 9 wickets.

 

 

Quarterfinals 4

Hyderabad versus Gujarat

Hyderabad stunned fancied Gujarat side in the 4th quarterfinals played at Palam A Ground, New Delhi. Gujarat captain Piyush Chawla won the toss and decided to field first.

After the loss of an early wicket, Hyderabad captain Tanmay Agarwal and Tilak Verma steadied the ship putting on 46 runs for the 2nd wicket. Tilak Verma showed intent putting Gujarat bowlers under immense pressure. Himlay Agarwal struggled with his timing while Verma kept the pressure on Gujarat bowlers. Agarwal and Verma added 53 runs for the 3rd wicket. Rahul Buddhi scored a quickfire 25 off 16 balls to help Hyderabad post a competitive total of 158 for 5 in 20 overs. Tilak Verma was the top scorer with 75.

In reply, Gujarat did not get off to a great start as they lost 2 quick wickets early. Hyderabad bowlers kept the pressure on Gujarat batters. Despite good knocks by Het Patel, Piyush Chawla, Gujarat could not cross the line. Ripal Patel was the top scorer for Gujarat with 35. Hyderabad won the match by 30 runs.

Hyderabad 158 for 5 in 20 overs (Tilak Verma 75, Tanmay Agarwal 31, Piyush Chawla 2/9, Chintan Gaja 2/32) beat Gujarat 128 for 8 in 20 overs ( Ripal Patel 35, Ravi Teja 3/27, Chama Milind 2/28) by 30 runs.

Semi-finals line up

2.       Karnataka versus Vidarbha ( Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi)- 20th November.
