WBBL 2021: Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana plays historic innings
Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder were involved in a thrilling high-scoring match played at McKay on Wednesday.
Sydney Thunder captain Darlington won the toss and decided
to field first. The young Indian opener Jemimah Rodrigues fell cheaply scoring
just 2 runs. Indian T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur came to the crease and took a few balls to settle. At the end of the first six overs, Melbourne Renegades
made 36 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Kaur upped the ante along with
Carly Lesson. Kaur took the attack to Thunder bowling keeping the momentum going
for Melbourne Renegades. After settling in, Kaur played innovative strokes reaching
his fifty off just 38 balls. The experienced Indian batter hammered the Thunder
bowlers. Kaur has been in sensational form for Melbourne Renegades this season.
He put on an excellent batting display remaining not out on 81 off 55 balls.
She along with Leeson added 91 runs for the 3rd wicket.
After today’s match against Sydney Thunder, Kaur is
currently the second leading run-getter with 390 runs from 10 matches ( 10
innings) with 3 half-centuries to her name. She has been able to strike the
ball brilliantly and helped Melbourne Renegades qualify for the finals.
Chasing a massive total of 176 runs to win, Smriti Mandhana
began off cautiously before putting the pressure on Renegades bowlers. Thunder
lost an early wicket of Sammy Jo Johnson. Sydney Thunder made 46 for 1 at the
end of the first six overs.
Smriti Mandhana looked in great touch putting the Renegades
bowlers under immense pressure with her brilliant strokes. Mandhana completed
her fifty off 31 balls and kept Thunder on course for the chase. After the
break, the left-handed opener was not able to time the ball as Renegades'
bowlers did not allow them to hit boundaries.
Things looked quite tough for Sydney Thunder before
Mandhana hit 24 runs off Holy Ferling over and completed her maiden WBBL century
off 57 balls. Mandhana could not take Sydney Thunder to cross the line as Kaur
bowled a brilliant final over. She remained not out on 114 off 64 balls.
Despite a disappointing season for Thunder, Smriti Mandhana showed great
batting display scoring so far 348 runs from 11 matches (11 innings) with 1
century and 2 half-centuries.
Kaur and Mandhana will look to continue their form in
upcoming matches. This will help them in good stead for the prestigious Women’s
World Cup to be played in 2022.
