Ashes 2021 Day 2 2nd Test: Australia in a dominating position

 The Australian Cricket Team ended the 2nd day in a commanding position against battered England side in Pink Ball Test match played at Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Starting on the overnight score of 221 for 2, Marnus Labuschagne and stand-in captain Steve Smith began on a decent against disciplined England bowling. Ollie Robinson was bought into the attack and got the right result immediately taking edge to Buttler was deemed as a no-ball due to overstepping. Labuschagne finally reached his century off 287 balls. Robinson finally got the reward for brilliant bowling getting rid of Labuschagne LBW. Labuschagne and Smith added 65 runs for the 3rd wicket.

The England bowlers kept on plugging brilliant lines and lengths. Travis Head played some lovely shots against Woakes. Joe Root decided to bring himself into the attack and dismissed Head who was bowled while trying to hit another aggressive shot. On other hand, Steve Smith kept the pressure on the visitors’ bowlers reaching his 50 off 135 balls. Smith and Head added 50 runs for the 4th wicket. Ben Stokes produced a stunning delivery to get the wicket of Cameron Green giving England some hopes. Australia ended at 302 for 5 at end of the first session.

Alex Carey looked solid and put the bad deliveries for boundaries. Steve Smith also kept the pressure back on England bowlers with positive intent. There were few half chances as Alex Carey's catch did not carry to slips. After that, Carey and Smith kept on hitting runs at a quick pace. The veteran James Anderson got the big wicket of Smith. Smith decided to review the decision for LBW, but it was retained due to the umpire’s call. Smith and Carey added 91 runs for the 6th wicket. Carey looked solid and completed his maiden Test fifty off 104 balls. Soon after, he chipped a straightforward catch to Haseeb Hameed at covers. With that, the umpires called for dinner with Australia on 390 for 7.

The third session saw the debutant Michael Neser play cricketing shots along with Mitchell Starc. After a few overs, Neser and Starc upped the ante taking on England bowlers. Neser showed intent against Woakes making life miserable for visitors. Neser quickfire innings came to an end caught by Stuart Broad at long-on. Neser and Starc added 58 runs for the 8th wicket. Jhye Richardson joined in with Starc hitting quickfire runs. Richardson was caught behind by Buttler in search of quick runs. Australia declared their innings on a massive total of 573 for 9.

Australian quick bowlers Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, and Neser kept the England opening pair honest. Burns's poor form continued as Starc produced a good delivery caught by Smith. Richardson kept the pressure on the England batters with nagging lines and lengths. Neser got his maiden Test wicket with a poor stroke by Hameed caught by Starc. Joe Root and Dawid Malan remained solid as the umpires called off play earlier to thundering in the background. England ended the 2nd day at 17 for 2.

England 17 for 2 in 8.4 overs ( Hameed 6, Burns 4, Neser 1/4), Starc 1/11) trail Australia 473 for 9 in 150.4 overs ( Labuschagne 103, Warner 95, Smith 93, Stokes 3/113, Anderson 2/58) by 456 runs.
