Ashes 2021/22 3rd Test 2nd Day: Australia on brink of retaining the Ashes
The Australian Cricket Team put the visitors under immense pressure with a hostile display of pace bowling to end the 2nd day on brink of retaining the Ashes played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Monday.
Starting on the overnight score of 61 for 1, Australia lost the early wicket of nightwatchman Nathan Lyon as Ollie Robinson produced a superb delivery.
The England pace bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing the Australian
pacers to score runs easily. Mark Wood produced a superb delivery to get rid of
dangerous Labuschagne caught by Joe Root leaving Australia struggling. Marcus
Harris looked confident with his strokes keeping the scoreboard ticking. The veteran
James Anderson produced a peach to get rid of Steve Smith. Travis Head came to the
crease and looked positive right from the word go. Australia went into the
lunch break with the scoreboard reading 131 for 4.
Joe Root decided to bring Jack Leach into the attack after the lunch break. Head and Harris played with intent putting pressure on England.
Harris completed his fifty off 130 balls. Jos Buttler's poor form continued with
gloves as he missed the stumped chance to get rid the wicket of Head. Head and
Harris put the pressure back on England bowlers hitting bad deliveries for
boundaries. Ollie Robinson dismissed the well-set Head caught by Root. Harris and
Head added 61 runs for the 5th wicket. James Anderson produced
another beauty to get rid of the well-set Harris caught by Root. Cameron Green and
Alex Carey struggled with top-quality bowling by Wood, Anderson. Haseeb Hameed
missed a golden run-out chance. Alex Carey and Cameron Green ensured that
Australia end the 2nd session at 200 for 6.
It was a superb start for England in the final session as
Leach dismissed Green LBW to bring back England into the game. Soon, Stokes
struck to get the wicket of Alex Carey leaving Australia struggling. Pat
Cummins and Mitchell Starc scored some vital runs. The England captain Joe Root
decided to take 2nd new ball immediately. Anderson finally got the
wicket dismissing Cummins caught by Hameed. Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc
provided some valuable runs before Wood dismissed Boland with a good catch by
Crawley to bowl out Australia for 267. Thanks to an important contribution by
the lower order, Australia took a lead of 82 runs.
In reply, Zak Crawley and Haseeb Hameed survived an excellent
display of fast bowling by Starc and Pat Cummins. Crawley survived a catch
chance as Carey could not grab the chance. Starc produced stunning deliveries
to get wickets of Crawley and Malan off successive deliveries to derail England’s
top order. The atmosphere at the stadium was electric as Starc almost grabbed
the wicket of Joe Root.
Joe Root looked edgy surviving a few anxious moments. Scott
Boland was bought into the attack and dismissed Hameed and then nightwatchman Jack
Leach with a stunning delivery to leave England in tatters. Joe Root and Ben
Stokes ended the 2nd day without any more wickets as the Australian
team is just 6 wickets away from retaining Ashes.
