Ashes 2021/22 3rd Test Day 1: Australia puts England on the backfoot
The Australian Cricket Team kept the England team on the backfoot after a dominating display by the bowlers of the 3rd Ashes Test match played at iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Sunday.
After a short rain delay break, Australian captain Pat
Cummins won the toss and decided to field first. Cummins who did not feature in
the second match produced a magical first spell dismissing England Haseeb Hameed
with beauty and then Zak Crawley with a lovely catch by Chris Green. The England
captain Joe Root looked in a positive mood putting the bad balls away for
boundaries. Scott Boland playing his debut Test match did not look threatening enough.
Dawid Malan also looked good with solid defense technique. At the stroke of
lunch break, Cummins got rid of Malan providing a simple catch to Warner. Malan
and Root added 48 runs for the 3rd wicket. England ended the first
session at 61 for 3.
The England captain Joe Root showed intent against the
Australian bowlers and reached his fifty off 76 balls. Soon after, Mitchell
Starc dismissed well-set Root playing a loose stroke providing a simple catch to
Alex Carey leaving England in big trouble. Ben Stokes put the pressure on
Nathan Lyon by coming down the track and hitting runs. Australian bowlers kept
tight lines and lengths not allowing Stokes and Bairstow. Cameron Green
dismissed Stokes trying to cut the shot but gave a simple catch to Nathan Lyon at
backward point. Stokes and Bairstow added 33 runs 5th wicket. Jos
Buttler could not control his shot-making trying to hit a six but provided an easy
catch to Scott Boland at deep midwicket. With that wicket, the umpires called
it tea break with the scoreboard reading 128 for 6.
It was a brilliant start for the Australian team in the
third session also as Scott Boland grabbed his maiden Test wicket getting rid
of Mark Wood. Wood was given out by the umpire but on review, it was retained
out due to the ball hitting pad before bat. Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Robinson provided
a few good shots before Starc produced a superb delivery to get rid of
Bairstow hitting the gloves caught by Green.
Jack Leach and Ollie Robinson did a decent job by hitting
attacking strokes. Lyon dismissed Leach with a lovely delivery caught by Smith
at slips. Ollie Robinson provided some entertainment taking on Starc before
trying to score runs quickly caught at deep midwicket by Scott Boland. It was a
superb bowling effort as Australia dismissed England for 185 in the first
innings.
David Warner looked in decent touch hitting the bad balls
away for boundaries. The England pace trio of Robinson, Wood, and Anderson did
not bowl consistent lines troubling Australian openers. Wood bowled with pace
but was not able to provide any breakthrough. The veteran James Anderson
dismissed Warner with a lovely low catch by Zak Crawley. Warner and Harris
added 57 runs for the opening wicket. Nathan Lyon came as nightwatchman survived.
Marcus Harris got hurt on his finger but ended the day with a boundary.
Australia ended the first day in a strong position at 61 for 1.
Australia 61 for 1 in 16 overs ( Warner 38, Harris 20*,
Anderson 1/14) trail England 185 in 65.1 overs ( Root 50, Bairstow 35, Cummins
3/36, Lyon 3/36) by 124 runs.
