Ashes 2021/22 4th Day 1st Test: Australia makes easy work of England

 The Australian Cricket Team started the second cycle of the ICC World Championship with a dominating 9 wicket win over England on the 4th day of the 1st Test match played at Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday.

Nathan Lyon got the major milestone of picking 400 Test wickets dismissing Malan taking the inside edge to Labuschagne at short leg. Malan and Root added 162 runs for the 3rd wicket. Soon after, Cameron Green produced a good delivery to get rid of England captain Joe Root to leave England in massive trouble.

 Lyon took his 2nd wicket dismissing Ollie Pope with a simple catch at slips. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler showed some intent with positive strokes keeping the Australian bowlers under some pressure. Cummins produced a snorter with second new ball grabbing the wicket of Ben Stokes. Hazlewood then got rid of Buttler providing an easy catch to Carey. Chris Woakes helped England to take the lead to keep delaying the inevitable. Lyon got wickets of Ollie Robinson caught by Head at backward point and hitting timber of Mark Wood. Green dismissed Chris Woakes trying to uppercut caught by Alex Carey bundling out England for 297. With the final wicket being dismissed, the umpires called it lunch.

Chasing a paltry total of 20 runs to win, Alex Carey came to open the innings along with Marcus Harris. Root decided to review the decision for LBW, but the decision was retained to not out as it hit the inside edge. Robinson dismissed Carey caught by Buttler. Marcus Harris smashed winning runs with a boundary to help Australia register a thumping 9 wicket win.

It was a dominating performance by the Australian team right from the word go. The Australian pace trio of Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood bundled out visitors for 147 after Joe Root decided to bat first. Thanks to brilliant knocks by Warner, Labuschagne, and Travis Head, Australia posted 425 with a big lead of 278 runs. Despite Root and Malan's innings, the rest of England's batting order failed.

Nathan Lyon became the 3rd Australian bowler after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to grab 400 wickets in Test matches. After being stuck for 399 wickets since the series against India at home, Lyon finally broke the milestone.

After a disappointing performance, England has been docked 5 points for slow over-rate in the ICC Test Championship points table. Australia would be looking to continue their brilliant performance in the remaining two Test matches in the year.

For his 152 off 148 balls, Travis Head was named the man of the match. Australia took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes. The second Test match will be a day-night affair starting from 16th December at Adelaide Oval.

  Australia 425 in 104.3 overs (Head 152, Warner 94, Labuschagne 74, Robinson 3/58, Wood 3/85,) and 20 for 1 in 5.1 overs (Harris 9*, Carey 9, Robinson 1/13) beat England 147 in 50.1 overs ( Buttler 39, Pope 35, Cummins 5/38, Starc 2/35) and 297 in 103 overs ( Root 89, Malan 82, Lyon 4/91,  Cummins 2/51) 9 wickets.

 Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday. Netherlands captain Peter Seelar won the toss and decided to bat first.  The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday. It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli. Yadav struck again to dismiss Malan with another good catch by Rohit Sharma to leave England in big trouble at 62 for 5. Ollie Pope survived few anxious moments against Bumrah and Yadav. After the initial spell by both Indian bowlers, Bairstow and Pope took the advantage of poor bowling by Siraj and Thakur.
