Ashes 2021/22 Day 2 Test 1: Australia’s domination continues

 Thanks to brilliant knocks by Warner, Labuschagne, and Head, Australia ended the 2nd day of the 1st Ashes Test match in a commanding position played at Gabba, Brisbane on Thursday.

Ollie Robinson got the early breakthrough for England getting rid of Marcus Harris with a good catch at slips. Robinson kept on producing nagging lines against Warner and Labuschagne. After surviving the initial spell by England pacers, Warner and Labuschagne did not allow Jack Leach to settle hitting him for runs keeping the pressure on England captain Joe Root. Warner was clean bowled, but Ben Stokes overstepped. Labuschagne looked in complete control reaching his fifty off 71 balls. At the end of the first session, Australia made 113 for 1.

It could have been an ideal start for the visitors as Rory Burns dropped a simple chance off Warner in the very first over. Warner and Labuschagne kept the momentum going on for Australia keeping the scoreboard ticking with regular boundaries. Warner reached his fifty off 102 balls. Robinson bowled with control and troubled Warner. England got a much-needed breakthrough as Labuschagne was not able to control down the cut giving a simple catch to Mark Wood at backward point. Labuschagne and Warner added 156 runs for the 2nd wicket. Warner survived a run-out chance as Hameed could not hit the stumps. England decided to review for LBW, but the decision was upheld due to ball pitching outside off. Before tea break, Mark Wood took the wicket of Steve Smith caught by Buttler. Australia ended the 2nd session at 193 for 3.

Robinson struck twice in one over getting wickets of well-set Warner caught by Stokes and then Cameron Green bowled not offering a shot to bring back England into the game. Travis Head struggled initially before taking on England bowlers. Root decided to bring himself on as Head and Carey kept the pressure on the visitors with flurry of boundaries. Chris Woakes dismissed Alex Carey with a good catch by Ollie Pope. Carey and Head added 41 runs for the 6th wicket.

Ben Stokes struggled for rhythm as Head looked in superb touch reaching his fifty off just 51 balls to keep the momentum going on. Head blasted away the England pacers especially Mark Wood. Ollie Robinson went off the field due to fitness issues. Head showed intent against Jack Leach keeping the scoreboard ticking at a quick pace.

England captain Joe Root dismissed Australian captain Pat Cummins caught by Hameed at leg slips. Cummins and Head added 70 runs for the 7th wicket. Head completed his 3rd Test century off 85 balls to keep Australia racing away to a big lead. Root decided to take the 2nd new ball immediately. Head and Starc ensured that the hosts end day 2 at 343 for 7. Starc and Head added so far 37 runs for the 8th wicket.

Australia 343 for 7 in 84 overs ( Head 112*, Warner 94, Labuschagne 74, Robinson 3/48) lead England 147 in 50.1 overs ( Buttler 39, Pope 35, Cummins 5/38, Starc 2/35) by 196 runs.

 Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday. Netherlands captain Peter Seelar won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Ben Cooper was run out in a mix-up as the umpire checked if Paul Stirling took the bails off and the decision was retained as out.  The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday. It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli. Yadav struck again to dismiss Malan with another good catch by Rohit Sharma to leave England in big trouble at 62 for 5. Ollie Pope survived few anxious moments against Bumrah and Yadav. After the initial spell by both Indian bowlers, Bairstow and Pope took the advantage of poor bowling by Siraj and Thakur.
