Ashes 2021/22 Day 5 2nd Test: Australia thrash England despite Buttler heroics
Despite Jos Buttler’s brilliance, Australia registered an emphatic win over England on the fifth and final day of the Pink Ball Test match played at Adelaide Oval on Monday. With this win, Australia won 12 more points in the latest ICC Test championship points table.
Starting the final day on 82 for 4, it was not an ideal
start for the visitors as Ollie Pope fell cheaply to Mitchell Starc. Soon, Jos Buttler
could have been dismissed taking edge as Carey and Warner were not able to judge the
chance. Ben Stokes and Buttler remained solid enough to frustrate the Australian
bowlers. Nathan Lyon got rid of Stokes via review for LBW. The umpires gave it
not out and on review, it was overturned to out. Chris Woakes looked positive with
his intent to keep the good balls away and hit bad deliveries for boundaries.
Jos Buttler kept the Australian bowlers at bay. At the end of the first
session, England scored 142 for 6.
The second session also began well for England as Woakes and
Buttler kept the Australian bowlers wicketless. Australian captain Smith
decided to take the second new ball immediately. Jhye Richardson produced a
stunning delivery getting rid of Woakes. Woakes and Buttler added 61 runs for
the 7th wicket. Ollie Robinson played the Australian bowlers well
along with Jos Buttler. Nathan Lyon troubled Robinson before dismissing him
with a good catch by Smith at slips. Robinson faced 39 deliveries for his 8
runs. Stuart Broad was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned
to not out hitting the inside edge. On the other hand, Buttler showed great
defensive technique against good quality Australian bowling. England ended the
2nd session at 180 for 8. Smith decided to give Travis Head a few
overs.
Buttler's heroic innings came to an end as he hit his own
stumps. He faced 207 runs for his 26 runs. Jhye Richardson kept his calm and
dismissed James Anderson with a sharp bouncer caught by Cameron Green at gully
to give Australia a 275 runs win.
Australia
473 for 9 in 150.4 overs (Labuschagne 103, Warner 95, Smith 93, Stokes 3/113,
Anderson 2/58) and 230 for 9 in 61 overs (Head 51, Labuschagne 51, Green 33*,
Robinson 2/54, Root 2/27) beat England 236 in 84.1 overs (Malan 80, Root 62,
Stokes 34, Starc 4/37, Nathan Lyon 3/58) and 192 in 113. 1 overs ( Woakes 44,
Burns 34, Jhye Richardson 5/42, Starc 2/43) by 275 runs.
With
this win, Australia takes a 2-0 lead in the Ashes. For 103 and 51, Marnus Labuschagne
was named the man of the match. The 3rd Test will be played from 26th
December at iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG.
