Ashes 2021/22 Test 1 Day 1: Australia pacers wreak havoc
It was a perfect start as Australian pace bowlers wreaked havoc on a rain-curtailed 1st Day of the 1st Ashes Test match played at Gabba, Brisbane on Wednesday.
England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first.
Mitchell Starc produced a peach to dismiss Rory Burns off the very first ball. The
pitch at Gabba troubled the England batters. Things became tough for the
visitors as Josh Hazlewood dismissed Dawid Malan caught by Alex Carey making
his Test debut.
Josh Hazlewood set up Joe Root brilliantly before producing
an edge straight into the hands of Warner at slips to leave England in massive
trouble at 11 for 3. Ben Stokes made his return to Test cricket after some time
but was found wanting top-quality Australian pace bowling. The newly
appointed captain Pat Cummins produced a good delivery caught by Labuschagne to
put England under immense pressure. Ollie Pope came to the crease and looked
confident with his defense technique. Haseeb Hameed opened with Rory Burns remained
decisive. Nathan Lyon and Cameron Green were bought into the attack, but Pope
and Hameed showed intent to score runs. At the end of the first session,
England made 59 for 4.
It was a superb start by Australia in the second session as
Pat Cummins dismissed Hameed in the very first over with a good catch by Steve
Smith to leave England struggling big time. Jos Buttler looked positive right
from the word go putting Josh Hazlewood, Cummins under some pressure along with Ollie Pope. The two England batters Pope and Buttler kept the scoreboard
ticking with positive intent.
Pat Cummins decided to bring Starc and Lyon into the attack
after a spell by himself and Hazlewood. Mitchell Starc produced a beauty to
dismiss Jos Buttler caught by Carey. Buttler and Pope added 52 runs for the 6th
wicket. Cameron Green got his first test wicket with a lovely bouncer caught by
Hazlewood at fine leg making life tough for England. Pat Cummins again bought
himself on and got rid of Ollie Robinson to leave the visitors in massive
trouble. Chris Woakes scored some quick runs with boundaries while Mark Wood looked
confident with his strokes. After the short resistance, Cummins dismissed Mark
Wood with a sharp bouncer caught by Labuschagne at short leg. Cummins polished
off the England innings grabbing his 5th wicket getting Chris Woakes
with a good catch by Hazlewood at fine leg. With that wicket, the tea break was
called by the umpires.
Due to persistent rains and bad light, the 3rd
session was completely washed out. Thanks to a brilliant bowling effort, Australia
bowled England for a paltry total of 147.
It was a superb bowling effort by the Australian pace trio
of Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood to rattle the England batting.
England 147 in 50.1 overs (Jos Buttler 39, Ollie Pope 35,
Pat Cummins 5/38, Starc 2/35)
Pat Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, and Green bowl out England for a paltry total of 147 on the first day of the first Ashes Test series
