Australia versus England 2nd Test 1st Day: Labuschagne and Warner’s brilliance puts Australia in driver’s seat
The Australian Cricket Team ended the 1st day of the Pink Ball Test match in a driver’s seat against England played at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
Stand-in captain Steve Smith won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was a brilliant start by the experienced duo of James Anderson and
Stuart Broad making the ball talk. Marcus Harris was given out and on review, it
was overturned to not out as the ball was missing leg stump. David Warner struggled
against the experienced England pace duo. A superb one-handed catch by Jos
Buttler diving helped England get their breakthrough.
Anderson and Broad kept Warner quiet not allowing him to
open his account. England captain Joe Root decided to take a review, but the
decision was upheld. Marnus Labuschagne played with intent putting the bad
balls away for runs. Warner got his first run after facing 30 deliveries. Ben
Stokes was introduced into the attack and peppered Labuschagne with short
balls. Stuart Broad deceived Labuschagne’s bat on four successive occasions but
did not yield any results. Joe Root also bought himself on to increase the over-rate.
At the end of the first session, Australia posted just 45 for 1.
Labuschagne and Warner took some time to settle after the
first session putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Jos Buttler
dropped a tough chance to get rid of Labuschagne. Warner looked in decent touch
taking on the short balls by Ben Stokes. Warner and Labuschagne kept the scoreboard
ticking making life tough for England bowlers.
The England captain Joe Root decided everything around with
their bowlers, but the two batters remained in complete control. Warner completed
his half-century off 108 balls while Labuschagne reached fifty off 156 balls.
At the end of the 2nd session, Australia scored 129 for 1.
Labuschagne and Warner began the third session on a good
note keeping the scoreboard ticking. Stokes eventually dismissed Warner with a
short delivery straight into the hands of Broad. Warner and Labuschagne added 172
runs for the 2nd wicket. Stokes almost deceived Labuschagne but fell
short of Jos Buttler.
Steve Smith came to the crease and looked a little iffy
against the England bowlers. Joe Root decided to take 2nd new ball immediately.
Before the end of the day’s play, Jos Buttler dropped a simple chance to get rid of Labuschagne.
Labuschagne and Smith so far added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket.
