BWF World Championship 2021 Day 6: 4 Singles players qualify for the quarterfinals

 The Indian shuttlers had a brilliant day as all 4 singles players made it into the quarterfinals of BWF World Championship 2021 played at Carolina Marin Stadium, Huelva on Thursday.

 Defending champions PV Sindhu defeated nemesis Pornpaee Chocuwong in two straight games. It was an impressive start by the Indian putting the Thailand player under pressure with brilliant shots taking an early lead. Chocuwong made a strong comeback to level the scores. Sindhu kept the pressure on the opposition making life tough taking an 11-9 lead at the break. After the break, the Indian showed aggressive intent with smashes and quick movement before winning the first game easily at 21-14.

The second game also began well for the Indian taking an early lead. Chocuwong took 4 points in succession before Sindhu put Thai player under pressure with brilliant attacking play. At the mid-game interval, the Indian led 11-7. After the break, the defending Champion Sindhu looked in complete control. Chocuwong showed some fight with points in succession before the Indian won it by 21-18 to move into the quarterfinals. She will face Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

Kidambi Srikanth continued his impressive run in the tournament defeating Lu of China in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by former world number 1 winning the match by 21-10, 21-15 to move into the quarterfinals. He will take on 28th ranked Netherlands player Mark Caljouw

The women’s doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to Kititharakul and Prajongjai of Thailand in two straight games. Thai pair started on an aggressive note taking points in succession to put the Indian pair under pressure. Ponnappa and Reddy fought back strongly to level the scores at 6-6. Kitithakrual and Prajongai dominated the Indian pair winning points in succession taking an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Ponnappa and Reddy level the scores at 11-11 before the Thai pair never looked back winning the first game easily by 21-13.

Thai pair dominated the 2nd game right from the word go and never allowed opposition a chance. At the mid-game interval, the experienced pair led 11-5. After the break, the sixth-seeded Thai pair showed more consistency winning the match by 21-15 to move into the quarterfinals.

Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty lost to Ong Yiew and Teo of Malaysia in a three-game thriller. The Malaysian pair started the first game on an aggressive note initial lead. The match ebbed and flowed with both pairs taking alternate points. Ong and Teo looked solid with defense taking an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, both pairs played aggressive badminton taking alternate points. Satwik and Chirag had game points with a 20-18 lead before the Malaysian pair fought back strongly to win the first game with 22-20.

The second game also ebbed and flow right from the word go. Both pairs played aggressive badminton especially with Chirag and Reddy produced brilliant smashes. At the break, the Indian pair had a slender 11-10 lead. This time around, the Indian pair closed out the second game with 21-18 scoreline.

Ong and Teo produced a dominating display in the third game making life tough for the young Indian pair. At the mid-game interval, the Malaysian pair had commanding 11-3 lead. After the break, Satwik and Chirag tried their best to make a comeback but the Malaysian pair won it easily at 21-15 to move into the quarterfinals.

HS Prannoy produced a stunning performance to defeat higher-ranked Denmark player Rasmus Gemke in three thrilling games. Prannoy lost the first game 16-21 before staging a superb comeback with a 21-8 win in 2nd game. The third and deciding game was a close-fought affair as both pairs fought for each point as the Indian held his nerves to win it by 22-20 to move into the quarterfinals. He will face Loh Kean Yew of Singapore.

Lakshya Sen registered straight sets win over Kevin Cordon. It was a dominating performance by the Indian winning it by 21-13, 21-8 to move into the quarterfinals. He will take on Zhao Jung Peng of China.

Hoping to see all four shuttlers make history by reaching the semi-finals and ensuring medals at the prestigious BWF World Championship 2021.
