BWF World Championship Day 7: Kidambi Srikanth, Sen confirms medals, Sindhu and Prannoy crash out
It was a mixed day for the Indian shuttlers as Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective quarterfinals matches at BWF World Championship 2021 played at Carolina Marin Stadium, Huelva Spain on Friday.
The defending Champions PV Sindhu could not match the speed
of World number 1 Tai Tzu Ying losing the match in two straight games. It was a
decent start as both players took 2 points each before Tai kept the pressure on
the Indian shifting the pace with drop shots and smashes. Tai took a commanding
11-6 lead at interval. After the break, Sindhu made a good recovery to narrow
down the gap to 16-18 and then with 17-19 with brilliant cross-court smashes.
The Indian could not maintain the pace as she hit the shuttle out as Tai won the first game easily at 21-17.
Both players fought for each point in the second game, but
Tai took an 11-8 lead at the interval. Sindhu kept the pressure back on World
number 1 Tai with a brilliant smash to reduce the gap at 10-11 and then Sindhu fought
back strongly to level the scores at 12-12. Tai produced some brilliant shots
as she never looked back winning the second game and match with a scoreline of 21-13.
With this, Sindhu failed to defend the title that she won in 2019.
Kidambi Srikanth secured his first medal in BWF World
Championship with a straight-game win over Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands. The
Indian put on a dominating display in the first game racing towards an 11-5 lead
at the interval. After the break, Srikanth looked sharp with his defense and
attacking play winning the first game easily at 21-8.
Srikanth produced a dominating display in the second game-winning it 21-7 to confirm India’s first medal.
Lakshya Sen showed great fight and character to beat 42nd
ranked Zhao Jun Peng of China in three thrilling games. The match was a close-fought match right from the word go. Both players took alternate points before
the Chinese took an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Sen played
attacking badminton to win points in succession winning the first game easily at
21-15.
The second game saw the Chinese making a strong comeback dominating
the netplay and smashes. After the break, Zhao maintained the lead eventually
winning it by 21-15 to force the match into the decider.
It was an even keel right from the start, but Zhao played
attacking badminton to take an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the mid-game
break, the match ebbed and flow with both players taking alternate points. Sen made
a brilliant comeback in later stages trailing 19-20, the Indian took four
successive points winning it by 22-20.
Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth will face others in the
semi-finals. After Sai Praneeth won a bronze medal in 2019, one of the two
players would win a silver medal at least.
HS Prannoy's brilliant run came to an end as he lost to Loh of
Singapore in two straight games by 14-21, 12-21. Prannoy could not catch up
with the speed of the agile Singapore player.
