India versus South Africa 1st Test 3rd Day: Bowlers enjoy the day

 The pace bowlers enjoyed a brilliant day as both teams created havoc on the 3rd day of the 1st Test match played at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Tuesday.

Starting on the overnight score of 272 for 3, the Indian team did not begin well as they lost an early wicket of well-set KL Rahul down the leg catch. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi asked tough questions to Indian batters. KL Rahul and Rahane added 79 runs for the 4th wicket. Ajiyanka Rahane could not control his shot caught by de Kock. Ngidi grabbed the wicket of Rishabh Pant to pick his fifth wicket. Kagiso Rabada took wickets of Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur. Mohammed Shami also scored quick runs before being dismissed by Ngidi.  Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj hit some valuable runs in end. Marco Jansen grabbed his maiden Test wicket with a lovely catch from Mulder to bowl out India for 327.

In reply, South Africa did not have a great start as Bumrah grabbed the wicket of captain Dean Elgar. Keegan Pietersen and Markram provided some lovely shots. South Africa ended the first session at 21 for 1.

It was a perfect start for the Indian team in the 2nd session as Mohammed Shami grabbed wickets of Keegan Pietersen and Markram with stunning deliveries to leave South Africa in big trouble at 30 for 3. Jasprit Bumrah had to hobble due to an ankle injury. Mohammed Siraj came to bowl and took the wicket of Rassie Van der Dussen putting the hosts in massive trouble. KL Rahul dropped a simple catch chance to get rid of de Kock as he was on 0. Quinton de Kock and Bavuma played with intent putting the bad deliveries for boundaries.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur did not trouble de Kock and Bavuma as kept on ticking the scoreboard with boundaries. With things looking good for South Africa, Thakur grabbed the important wicket of de Kock taking the inside edge onto the stumps. De Kock and Bavuma added 72 runs for the 5th wicket. South Africa went into tea break with the scoreboard reading 109 for 5.

The third session saw Bavuma and Mulder showing intent hitting bad deliveries for boundaries. Shami did the job for India taking the wicket of Mulder with a simple catch to Pant. Bavuma looked impressive completing his fifty off 101 balls. Soon after, Shami took another wicket putting the South Africa team under immense pressure. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen provided some resistance taking on the Indian bowling line-up. Shardul Thakur dismissed Jansen to break 37 runs partnership for the 8th wicket.

Shami took his fifth wicket in the innings getting rid of Rabada with a simple catch to Pant. During brilliant spell, he grabbed the 200th wicket during his Test career. Bumrah was introduced into the attack and got rid of Maharaj caught by Rahane. Thanks to a superb bowling spell by Shami and pacers, India took a decent lead of 130 runs.

Mayank Agarwal survived a few anxious moments against Rabada and Ngidi. KL Rahul looked decent enough with defensive technique. Marco Jansen got the breakthrough getting the wicket of Agarwal caught by de Kock. Shardul Thakur was promoted as nightwatchman helping India end the 3rd day at 16 for 1.

India 327 in 105.3 overs ( KL Rahul 123, Agarwal 60, Lungi Ngidi 6/71, Rabada 3/72) and 16 for 1 in 6 overs ( KL Rahul 5*, Thakur 4*, Jansen 1/4) lead South Africa 197 in 62.3 overs ( Bavuma 52, de Kock 34, Shami 5/44, Bumrah 2/16) by 146 runs.
