India versus South Africa 1st Test 5th Day: First Test win for Team India in Centurion
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, the Indian Cricket Test team became the first Asian nation to defeat South Africa at their fort SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday.
Starting on the overnight score of 94 for 4, Dean Elgar and
Temba Bavuma looked comfortable against Bumrah and Shami. The South African
captain Elgar hit bad deliveries away for boundaries while Bavuma made the
batting look easy. Mohammed Shami dropped a simple return chance to get rid of
captain Elgar. Jasprit Bumrah provided the much-needed breakthrough for India dismissing
well-set Elgar with a ball that hit the crack and was given LBW. Elgar and
Bavuma added 36 runs for the 5th wicket.
Mohammed Siraj was bought into the attack and troubled
Quinton de Kock playing attacking strokes. After the initial spell by Bumrah
and Shami, Kohli decided to bring Ashwin into the attack also. De Kock
scored at a quick pace living dangerously. Siraj got rid of De Kock taking inside
edge onto the stumps. De Kock and Bavuma added 31 runs for the 6th
wicket. Shami did a brilliant job for India producing a superb delivery to
dismiss Wiaan Mulder to leave South Africa struggling. Marco Jansen and Bavuma
kept India at bay as South Africa ended the first session at 182 for 7.
The second session began well for Team India as Shami
produced a beauty to dismiss Jansen. It was a superb bowling effort by the pace battery
of the Indian team. R Ashwin got ended the match as he dismissed Kagiso Rabada
caught at backward point by Shami and then dismissed Lungi Ngidi caught by
Pujara at leg slip to bowl out South Africa for 191 runs to give India a
commanding 113 runs win.
It was a dominating performance by the World number 1 ranked
Test team. Thanks to the brilliant opening partnership of 117 runs between Mayank
Agarwal and KL Rahul, India posted 327 runs in the first innings.
Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul
Thakur took all 10 wickets among them to bowl out South Africa for 197 runs in
the first innings to take a massive 130 runs lead.
India 327 in 105.3 overs (KL Rahul 123, Agarwal 60, Lungi
Ngidi 6/71, Rabada 3/72) and 174 in 50.3 overs ( Pant 34, Rahul 23, Rabada
4/42, Jansen 4/55) beat South Africa 197 in 62.3 overs ( Bavuma 52, de Kock 34,
Shami 5/44, Bumrah 2/16) and 191 in 68 overs ( Elgar 77, Bavuma 35*, Bumrah 3/50,
Shami 3/63) by 113 runs.
With this win, India earned 12 more
points in the latest ICC Test Championship points table. For his 123 and 23, KL
Rahul was awarded the man of the match award.
The second Test will be played from 3rd
January 2022 at Wanders, Johannesburg. This was India’s fourth win on South
African soil with 2 wins coming at Wanders and one at Durban.
