Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021: India registers first win with a resounding win over Bangladesh
After a thrilling 2-2 draw against South Korea, the Indian men’s hockey team produced a dominating display against Bangladesh to register their first win of Asian Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy 2021 played at Maulana Bhasani Stadium, Dhaka on Wednesday.
The Indian team put pressure on the Bangladeshi defense
right from the word go. Despite doing circle penetrations, Manpreet Singh led
side could not convert chances into goals. In the 12th minute, Dilpreet
scored a brilliant field goal to give India a 1-0 lead and ended the first quarter
with a 1-0 scoreline.
It was an aggressive start by the Indian team in the 2nd
quarter also but they could do justice with chances. Dilpreet doubled the lead for India
with a superb field goal in the 22nd minute. Lalit Upadhyay made it
3-0 with a brilliant penalty corner goal in the 29th minute. At the
end of the first half, India had a 3-0 lead.
The Indian team started the third quarter on an aggressive
note as Akashdeep scored from a penalty corner in the 31st minute to
continue India’s domination. Bangladesh defended well in the first two quarters
and tried its best to make circle penetrations. India got their 10th
penalty corner but could not convert into goals. Jarmanpreet Singh scored from
a penalty corner in the 43rd minute to lead India’s charge with a 5-0
scoreline. At the stroke of the 3rd quarter, Dilpreet Singh scored his 3rd
goal of the match to make it 6-0 and ended the third quarter with the same scoreline.
Bangladesh get a rare attack going but the Indian defense got
numbers in their half but they could not make it into the circle. Akashdeep Singh
produced a brilliant field goal in the 54th minute to put India ahead by
7-0. Mandeep More put more misery on Bangladesh as he converted a penalty
corner into a goal in the 55th minute. Harmanpreet Singh made it 9-0
with another brilliant PC. India produced a dominating display as they won by
9-0.
The Indian men’s team move to 4 points with 1 win and 1
draw. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan in their next match on 17th
December.
