Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021: India ends the league with a resounding win over Japan
The Indian hockey team continued their impressive run as they ended the league stage with a resounding win over Japan of Men’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021 played at Maulana Bhasani Stadium, Dhaka on Sunday.
It was a superb start by the bronze medallists of the Tokyo
Olympics as they kept piling pressure on the Japanese defense. India was
awarded two penalty corners but did not convert into a goal. Soon after, Japan
too got a penalty corner through a fast counterattack. Harmanpreet Singh
converted a forceful penalty corner into a goal in the 10th minute
to give India a 1-0 lead. Japan produced superb skills but failed to convert. At end
of the first quarter, India still had a 1-0 lead.
The second quarter began off brilliantly for the Indian team
put the Japanese defense under pressure, but their defense was solid enough. Japan
earned a penalty corner as the umpire could not decide. A brilliant pass by Mandeep
and Shailand to Dilpreet Singh in the 23rd minute gave India a 2-0
lead. Japan produced superb attacks but could not put the Indian defense under
pressure. At the end of the first half, India still led 2-0.
Japan started the 3rd quarter on an aggressive note,
but the Indian defense remained solid. Jarmanpreet Singh produced a sensational
goal with a reverse hit in the 34th minute but Japan decided to review
the decision, it remained as it. Suraj Kakera produced a superb save from the
Japanese attack. Kenta Tanaka made a solo run as Suraj showed another brilliant
piece of goalkeeping to deny Japan a goal. Both teams had chances of scoring goals,
but goalkeepers kept them at bay. At the end of the third quarter, India still
led 3-0.
It was a superb start by India in the 46th minute
as Sumit scored a superb field goal from the mistake of a Japanese goalkeeper. India
kept the pressure on the Japanese defense. In the 53rd minute, Harmanpreet Singh
converted a brilliant penalty corner to continue India’s domination. Lakra gave
a superb pass to Shamser going past the Japanese goalkeeper making it 6-0. Krishna
Pathak came to goal keep and produced a sensational save. India ended the match
with 6-0 drubbing.
India finished the league stage with 3 wins and 1 draw. They
will face Japan in the 2nd semi-finals to be played on 21st
December.
