Top performers getting call ups for Indian ODI squad against South Africa
The BCCI announced a strong One-day international team for the 3 matches series against South Africa to be played from 19th January 2022.
Newly-appointed captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of
the series due to an injury. KL Rahul will take charge of the Indian team. The
other talking point about the ODI team is that Jasprit Bumrah has been named
as the vice-captain.
Ruturaj Gaikwad who scored 4 centuries in the recently
concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021 for Maharashtra has been included as an
opener along with KL Rahul. Shikhar Dhawan also makes a return to the ODI squad.
The middle-order comprises Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer,
Surya Kumar Yadav. Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan has been named as wicketkeepers.
Venetaksh Iyer who had a dream Vijay Hazare Trophy has been given
a call-up as an all-rounder option. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah,
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar are the pace
bowlers.
The ace-off spinner in Test matches Ravichandran Ashwin has made
a comeback in the ODI squad after a gap of 4 years. Washington Sundar also
makes a return to the squad after suffering an injury that ruled him out of IPL and
other important series for India. Yuzvendra Chahal has been included for Team
as the third spinner.
India and South Africa will play 3 ODI matches that will be a
part of the ICC ODI Super League. India will qualify directly for the 2023 World
Cup as host. The first ODI will be played on 19th at Boland Park,
Paarl, followed by on 21st at Paarl and the final ODI to be played
in Cape Town on 23rd January.
KL Rahul will be looking to start his captaincy stint on a
winning note.
